072619 - Bowl of Fruit with Animation - General Update Patter

A bowl of fruit changes over time as apples are eaten, replaced, and removed through timed updates. The visualization demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, where entering elements (a new lemon), updated elements (a changed apple type), and exiting elements (a removed apple) are handled smoothly. Built with D3 v5 and rendered as SVG, it uses ordinal scales for fruit color and radius, with all shapes and labels re-rendered on each state change. The scene is drawn using simple rectangles and groups, with no animation transitions, only discrete state updates.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3 v5, animating a bowl of fruit as apples are eaten, replaced with lemons, and removed. It shows how data joins handle enter, update, and exit selections, with circles transitioning their radius and position over one-second durations. The code uses `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, `selection.merge()` to combine enter and update states, and chained `transition().duration()` calls for smooth SVG animations. Random IDs track each fruit, ensuring stable element binding across state changes.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern (Before Animation)

Five fruit circles in a bowl animate through data changes, showing apples fading out, one apple changing into a lemon, and a fruit being removed. This example demonstrates the general update pattern with enter, update, and exit selections. It uses D3 v5's `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, SVG rendering, and `selection.merge` to handle transitions between data states.

Five circles represent a bowl of fruit, starting as five apples. Over time, the general update pattern modifies this collection: an apple is eaten, a second apple transforms into a lemon, and another apple is removed. The visualization uses D3 v5's `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping and the select/append/merge/exit pattern for declarative SVG updates. D3's `range` and `select` initialize the data and target the SVG element, respectively.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update pattern

Five circles representing fruit shrink or resize as apples are eaten and one apple morphs into a lemon, demonstrating the D3 general update pattern. The animation uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius scales, with D3's selection `.enter()`, `.merge()`, and `.exit()` transitions to handle data joins over a one-second duration. The JavaScript-driven example renders animated SVG circles with random IDs, updating the fruit bowl in response to timed array mutations.

A bowl of fruit updates as apples are eaten or replaced by lemons, demonstrating the general update pattern with enter, update, and exit selections. Over timed intervals, the SVG visualization removes the last apple, swaps the middle apple for a lemon, and filters out another apple, using d3.enter and d3.exit to manage the groups. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, with d3.select for the container and d3.range to generate initial data.

Bowl of fruit : General Update pattern

A bowl of five apples demonstrates the D3 General Update pattern, where entering, updating, and exiting circles animate smoothly as the data changes. Over time, apples are removed, one apple transforms into a lemon, and another is filtered out, with each transition using `transition().duration(1000)` to adjust radius and position. The example uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales, and d3-selection’s `data` with a key function on fruit IDs to manage DOM elements. Rendered as SVG via d3.v5.
