A bowl of five apples demonstrates the D3 General Update pattern, where entering, updating, and exiting circles animate smoothly as the data changes. Over time, apples are removed, one apple transforms into a lemon, and another is filtered out, with each transition using `transition().duration(1000)` to adjust radius and position. The example uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales, and d3-selection’s `data` with a key function on fruit IDs to manage DOM elements. Rendered as SVG via d3.v5.

Bowl of fruit : General Update pattern

Five apples and a lemon appear in a bowl, with a recurring animation removing a fruit, replacing an apple with a lemon, and then filtering out another apple. This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3 v5, using `selection.enter`, `selection.merge`, and `selection.exit` to handle data changes. The SVG rendering uses `scaleOrdinal` for fruit color and radius, with shapes drawn as circles and text labels.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with a bowl of fruit rendered as animated SVG circles. Five apples appear, then transition through enter, update, and exit phases as fruits are removed or transformed into lemons. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, selection.data with a key function, and chained .transition().duration() calls to animate circle attributes. Fruit identities are tracked via random IDs, allowing smooth morphing between states over a three-second timeline.

Bowl of fruit - General update pattern

Five fruit circles animate in a row, demonstrating D3’s general update pattern with enter, update, and exit transitions. An apple is removed, another apple changes into a lemon, and a third apple is deleted, with each circle’s radius and color adapting via `scaleOrdinal` mappings and `transition().duration(1000)` tweening. The SVG is rendered and re-rendered on a timer using `d3.select` and a custom `fruitBowl` function, with random `id` values as data keys.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples appear in a row, then one apple is removed, a second apple changes into a lemon, and a third apple is removed. The animation demonstrates the D3 general update pattern by using the `data()`, `enter()`, `merge()`, `exit()`, and `transition()` methods on D3 selections. The code applies an ordinal color scale and radius scale to distinguish fruit types, and uses `transition().duration()` and `.attr()` for animated size and position changes. Rendering is done with SVG and JavaScript, using D3 v5's selection and range utilities.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples sit in a shallow bowl, each drawn as a circle with a label. The general update pattern animates sequential changes: one apple disappears, an apple transforms into a lemon, and another apple is removed. The example uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, differentiating fruit by type, and SVG rendering through D3 selections with enter, merge, and exit operations to manage the dynamic fruit bowl.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples appear in a row, then shrink and vanish as they are eaten, while one apple transforms into a lemon through a color and size change. This demonstrates d3's general update pattern using `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections with `transition.attr` to animate circle radii and positions. The fruit types map to color and radius scales, with data bound by unique `id` keys. SVG circles render the bowl of fruit, and `setTimeout` calls trigger the staged updates over three seconds.

Bowl of fruit general update pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern with three apple and lemon circles transitioning in size and position over four seconds. The animation shows an apple disappearing, a lemon being swapped in, and a second apple being removed, with all circles smoothly resizing via `transition().duration(1000)`. The code uses D3 v5's `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, `selectAll('circle').data()` for data binding, and `enter()`, `merge()`, and `exit()` to handle state changes, rendering as SVG with hardcoded fruit objects generated via `range(5).map()`.

Bowl of fruit General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates D3’s General Update Pattern by animating a bowl of fruit as apples are eaten and one transforms into a lemon. Circles enter, update, and exit with staggered transitions over one-second intervals, smoothly resizing and recoloring via `scaleOrdinal`. Using d3.v5, the code applies `data` joins with key functions, merges enter/update selections, and chains `transition().duration(1000)` for radius and position changes, while exit transitions shrink circles to zero before removal, all rendered in SVG.
