Five fruit shapes are rendered as nested SVG groups, each containing a colored circle and text label. The visualization demonstrates D3's data join pattern with enter, update, and exit selections to animate changes in the fruit array. Using d3.select and scaleOrdinal from D3 v5, circles transition between red apples and yellow lemons based on data modifications triggered by setTimeout callbacks. The code imports fruitBowl from a module and manages object constancy through randomized id properties.

D3 Course Code Along - Nested Elements with Animated Transitions

Five fruits in a bowl animate through a sequence of state changes, transitioning between apples and a lemon as fruits are removed and replaced. The visualization demonstrates nested SVG elements with animated transitions using D3 v5's data join, keyed by unique IDs for object constancy. Circles and text labels update smoothly via `transition().duration(1000)`, while the bowl shape remains static. Population data files are included but unused in the displayed fruit interaction.

Bowl of fruit - Nested Elements

A dynamic fruit bowl demonstrates data joins and nested elements with D3 v5. Five circles represent apples, rendered as red groups with uppercase text labels. As the simulation runs, fruits disappear, and one apple transforms into a yellow lemon, changing both color and radius. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius scales, `selection.data` with object constancy, and group elements containing circle and text children, with enter, update, and exit selections managing transitions.

D3 Bowl of Fruit - With Nested Elements

This example demonstrates dynamic data updates with nested SVG elements, rendering apples and lemons in a rounded bowl shape. The visualization uses d3-selection's enter/merge/exit pattern within a custom `fruitBowl` function, updating fruit positions and styles as the data array changes over timed intervals. The code leverages `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, and binds fruit data to `<g>` groups containing nested `<circle>` and `<text>` elements. The animation cycles through removing, modifying, adding, and filtering fruits to show how joins handle each change.

Bowl of Fruit - Nested Elements_Singular Elements

A bowl of fruit demonstrates nested SVG elements with singular data joins. Five apples render as red circles inside a rounded rectangle bowl, each group containing a circle and a text label. Over time, the dataset shrinks, one apple changes into a yellow lemon, and another apple is removed. Using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, the code performs enter, update, and exit selections via `selection.enter()`, `merge()`, and `exit().remove()` to transition the fruit groups dynamically. The example shows how to manage hierarchical SVG structures with D3 v5.

Nested elements

Five fruit bowls appear as circles and labels, re-rendering on a timer as apples are removed or replaced with lemons. Each fruit is drawn as an SVG group containing a circle and text, with the circles colored and sized by a `d3.scaleOrdinal` based on fruit type. The code uses D3 v5 data joins to enter, update, and exit these nested elements within an SVG.

Fruit Bowl nested elements

This example demonstrates the D3 lifecycle for creating, updating, and removing nested SVG elements by managing a fruit bowl of apples and lemons. It shows how a single selection can synchronize groups, circles, and text labels as the underlying data array changes over time through timed mutations. Using D3 v5’s `select`, `range`, and `scaleOrdinal`, the code dynamically repositions and recolors each fruit’s circle and label, removing or modifying elements when fruits are eaten or replaced. The rendering relies on SVG groups and merge operations for efficient updates.

D3 Course Code Along - Bowl of fruit: Hover to select

A bowl of fruit renders as a row of red apples and yellow lemons in an SVG graphic. Hovering over a fruit highlights it with a blue outline, demonstrating interactive selection. The visualization uses D3 v5 with data joins and transitions to animate fruits entering, exiting, and changing type. The code applies `scaleOrdinal` for color mapping and `transition` with `attr` tweening, driven by random IDs for object constancy. Population trend data from CSV files accompanies the fruit demo, though the bowl itself uses generated fruit objects.

D3 Course 5: General Update Pattern Part 2

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with nested SVG elements, showing how a bowl of fruit changes over time through enter, update, exit, and merge operations. Animated transitions occur as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon, with each fruit drawn as a group containing a circle and text label. The code uses d3.select, data joins with key functions, d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, and explicitly manages nested element updates via merge. The data consists of generated fruit objects rendered as SVG groups.
