This example demonstrates a layered, generative art composition built with D3 version 7. The visualization shows 100 horizontal and vertical bars overlaid with two different mask effects, creating a grid-like pattern with a circular cutout in the center. The code uses `d3.select` and `d3.range` to construct the SVG elements, and `d3.symbol` to generate a star-shaped mask. The first mask uses a black background with a white path, while the second uses a white background with a black circle, producing contrasting visual results. The rendering is done entirely in SVG with inline styling.
