Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates how to load and parse CSV data from a remote URL using the Fetch API within an HTML page that includes D3.js v5. The code defines an asynchronous function that fetches a text file containing CSS named colors from a GitHub gist, then logs the raw CSV text to the browser console. The page itself displays a large "Hello HTML!" message styled with CSS, while the JavaScript handles the asynchronous data retrieval using promises and async/await syntax.

let's make a face

This example renders a scalable, smiling face using React components and D3's arc generator for the mouth. The face is drawn with a yellow circle, two eyes, and a curved mouth, all positioned via props passed to a reusable `Face` component. The layout adapts to the browser window, centering the face, while D3's `arc` method creates the mouth path. The SVG output is assembled through composed React components like `BackgroundCircle`, `Eyes`, and `FaceContainer`.

scatter -> line plot

This example shows how a scatter plot of temperature over time transforms into a line plot by connecting the data points with a smooth path. The visualization uses React to render SVG elements, with d3.scaleTime and d3.scaleLinear for scaling, and d3.line with curveNatural for the connecting curve. Data comes from a CSV file of weekly San Francisco temperatures, loaded via d3.csv. Hovering over each circle reveals a tooltip showing the day of the week.

Stylized Bar Chart

This stylized bar chart displays the top 10 most populous countries ranked by their 2020 population estimates from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 dataset. The visualization uses React with D3 v5 scales (scaleBand and scaleLinear) to create horizontal bars with axes, a population label, and tooltips showing formatted values. Rendered as SVG, the chart applies custom styling with the Poppins font and a teal color scheme, loading data asynchronously via d3.csv before trimming to the first 10 rows.

Axes with React and D3

A bar chart displays the ten most populous countries in 2020 using React to render SVG elements and D3 utilities for data loading and scales. The code fetches UN population data via `d3.csv`, maps it with a custom row function, and applies `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` to position and size rectangles. Custom tick lines are generated manually from `xScale.ticks()`, while React’s `useState` and `useEffect` manage the asynchronous loading state.

The Margin Convention

This example shows the top 10 most populous countries as a simple bar chart, with each country’s population represented by the width of a rectangle. The chart deliberately omits axes, ticks, and labels to highlight the importance of margins in visualization layout. Built with React and D3 v5, it uses `scaleBand`, `scaleLinear`, and `max` to map data to screen coordinates, while a fixed margin object reserves space around the SVG. Data comes from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019, rendered entirely as SVG elements.
