Full Sol LeWitt kind of reproduction with D3

This example uses D3 to generate a full-screen SVG reproduction of a Sol LeWitt–style geometric drawing. It renders two alternating sets of vertical and horizontal stripes, each partially masked by rows of D3’s built-in symbol shapes (including circles, crosses, and diamonds). The code leverages `d3.range`, `d3.symbol`, and SVG `<mask>` elements to create the overlapping optical effect, with the masks alternating between inverted and normal fill modes. All drawing is done in the browser using D3 v6 and SVG.

Sol LeWitt SVG

This example reproduces a Sol LeWitt-style drawing using D3.js and SVG, displaying a grid of horizontal and vertical striped bars that are partially revealed through circular masks. Two mask layers alternate between clipping the horizontal and vertical rectangles, creating a layered composition where the bars intersect and disappear within the central circle. The code uses D3’s `select`, `range`, and data joins (`join('rect')`) to generate 100 rectangles in each direction, with masks defined via SVG `<mask>` elements and applied through `attr('mask', 'url(#circle-mask)')`. The visualization renders full-window, with dimensions derived from `window.innerWidth` and `window.innerHeight`.

Making bar chart with React & D3

This example shows a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 countries by 2020 population using React and D3. It loads CSV data from a GitHub gist via `d3.csv`, transforms the population field to a number, and stores the sliced dataset in React state with `useState` and `useEffect`. The chart renders as SVG `rect` elements positioned by `d3.scaleBand` for countries and sized by `d3.scaleLinear` for population values. React handles the declarative rendering while D3 provides the scale utilities.

Rendering Data with React

A donut chart displays the frequency distribution of CSS named colors, with each slice representing a single color from a CSV dataset loaded via `d3.csv`. The React `useState` and `useEffect` hooks manage asynchronous data loading, while `d3.pie` and `d3.arc` compute the slice geometry and render SVG paths. The visualization demonstrates how React components can declaratively render D3-generated data, with `ReactDOM.render` mounting the chart into the DOM and the SVG `fill` attribute set to each color's hex value.

Vega-Lite API Template

This visualization displays USAID transfers to Ukraine, with each circle representing a transaction and its size mapped to the amount in US dollars. The chart uses a logarithmic scale for the y-axis and color to distinguish transaction types. Built with the Vega-Lite API, it loads CSV data via D3’s `csv` function and renders through Vega-Lite’s `markCircle` encoding, with tooltips provided by the Vega Tooltip handler. The configuration customizes axis and label styling for improved readability.

Loading Data with React and D3

This example demonstrates how React and D3 can work together to load and summarize external data. The app uses D3’s `csv` function to fetch a named CSS colors dataset from a GitHub gist, storing the result in React state via the `useState` and `useEffect` hooks. While the data loads, the interface displays the word “Loading”; once received, a preformatted text block reports the dataset’s column names and its approximate size in kilobytes, calculated with `d3.csvFormat` and `Math.round`. The rendering relies on React DOM, with D3 handling only the asynchronous data request.

Data parser

This example parses a CSV file of CSS named colors and displays basic metadata about it in large text. Using D3 v5’s `d3.csv` and `d3.csvFormat` methods, it reports the column names, the approximate file size in kilobytes, and the number of rows in the dataset. The data originates from a remote GitHub gist, and the output is rendered into a `<pre>` element. The code also includes commented alternatives using `fetch`, `async/await`, and `d3.csvParse`.

Interaction with React

A smiley face drawn as a React SVG circle follows the cursor around the screen. The application tracks mouse position through React state, updating on every `onMouseMove` event on the SVG element. App state changes trigger a re-render, moving the circle to the new coordinates. The example demonstrates binding React’s `useState` and `useCallback` hooks to interactive SVG rendering in a full-window viewport.

Smiley Face Part I

This example shows a grid of twelve identical smiley faces arranged in rows. Each face uses SVG circles for its yellow background and eyes, while the mouth is drawn with a D3 arc path. The React code assembles the face from modular components, and the d3.range function generates the array of twelve face instances. The rendering uses React’s declarative JSX syntax, with D3 v5 providing the arc geometry for the curved mouth.
