Five fruit icons animate through a sequence of data changes, demonstrating D3's nested update pattern. The visualization shows apples and lemons repositioning, changing color and radius, and being removed from the group over timed intervals. Using d3.scaleOrdinal for color and size mapping, the code applies transitions to enter, update, and exit selections. The example relies on selection.merge, transition.duration, and group elements to synchronize circles with their text labels.

Fruit - Update Pattern - Nested

An animated SVG demonstrates a nested update pattern for fruit data, showing an array of apples that lose elements and transform one into a lemon through time-based transitions. Five circles render initially, then sequential actions remove the last fruit, change the third fruit's type, and delete another element. The visualization uses d3 transitions with a 1000ms duration for positions, colors, and radii, while exit animations shrink removed elements to zero radius over 2000ms. The code applies d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, and d3-selection’s enter/merge/exit pattern to handle nested circle and text elements.

Fruit - Update Pattern - Nested

Five fruit bowls render as SVG circles and labels, using an update pattern to animate changes to the data array. The example cycles through eating apples and replacing one apple with a lemon, with transitions on position, fill color, radius, and text. The code uses D3 v5 selections with enter, merge, and exit, applying `transition().duration()` for staggered animations. Fruits are generated randomly, and nested selection patterns handle updates to circles and text elements within each group.

Fruit - Update Pattern - Nested, Transitions

A bowl of fruit changes over time as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon. The visualization demonstrates the D3 update pattern with nested elements. It uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius, and applies d3.transition to animate position changes over 1200 milliseconds. Exit transitions shrink removed fruits over 500 milliseconds. The SVG rendering is driven by a custom fruitBowl function that merges entering and existing groups.

Fruit - Update Pattern

Five fruit circles enter as apples and animate through a join sequence using D3’s data-join, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections. The code drives transitions for radius, color, and removal, with `d3.scaleOrdinal` mapping fruit type to size and hue. A timer updates the array, replacing an apple with a lemon and filtering out elements.

Bowl of Fruit - Nested Update Pattern.js

Five fruits with update patterns animate from apples to lemons, demonstrating the nested update pattern with grouped SVG elements. As time advances, the code removes, modifies, and inserts fruit elements, using D3's data joins with keys (`d.id`) and transitions. Cirles shrink to zero radius on exit, while entering lemons appear with distinct colors and sizes. The implementation uses `selection.enter`, `merge`, and `exit` with `transition.attr` to choreograph the changes.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing how enter, update, and exit selections handle dynamic data changes in a fruit bowl visualization. Five apples appear initially, then an apple is removed, another transforms into a lemon, and a second apple disappears, with each change animating smoothly over one second. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales based on fruit type, while d3-transition animates circle radius and fill attributes. SVG groups and shapes are bound to data with unique IDs, and the enter/merge/exit pattern manages the lifecycle.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern (Before Animation)

Five fruit circles in a bowl animate through data changes, showing apples fading out, one apple changing into a lemon, and a fruit being removed. This example demonstrates the general update pattern with enter, update, and exit selections. It uses D3 v5's `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, SVG rendering, and `selection.merge` to handle transitions between data states.
