Forked from Fruit - Update Pattern - Nested

A bowl of fruit changes over time as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon. The visualization demonstrates the D3 update pattern with nested elements. It uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius, and applies d3.transition to animate position changes over 1200 milliseconds. Exit transitions shrink removed fruits over 500 milliseconds. The SVG rendering is driven by a custom fruitBowl function that merges entering and existing groups.

Fruit - Update Pattern - Nested

An animated SVG demonstrates a nested update pattern for fruit data, showing an array of apples that lose elements and transform one into a lemon through time-based transitions. Five circles render initially, then sequential actions remove the last fruit, change the third fruit's type, and delete another element. The visualization uses d3 transitions with a 1000ms duration for positions, colors, and radii, while exit animations shrink removed elements to zero radius over 2000ms. The code applies d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, and d3-selection’s enter/merge/exit pattern to handle nested circle and text elements.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as items are added, removed, and modified. Initially five apples appear, then one is eaten, an apple is replaced by a lemon, and another apple is removed. The example uses D3's `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and transition system with `transition().duration()` to animate circle radii and colors, rendering in SVG. The code in `fruitBowl.js` shows enter, merge, and exit transitions, with each fruit assigned an `id` for key-based data joining.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern using animated transitions to manage changes in a dataset of fruit items. It shows how enter, update, and exit selections behave as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping based on fruit type, and applies transition().duration() to animate circle radius and position changes. The update flow is driven by JavaScript setTimeout calls that modify the fruits array and trigger re-rendering of the SVG circles.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with a bowl of fruit rendered as animated SVG circles. Five apples appear, then transition through enter, update, and exit phases as fruits are removed or transformed into lemons. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, selection.data with a key function, and chained .transition().duration() calls to animate circle attributes. Fruit identities are tracked via random IDs, allowing smooth morphing between states over a three-second timeline.

Bowl of Fruit - Nested Transitioned Update Pattern

Five fruits sit in a bowl, shrinking when removed, changing color from red apples to yellow lemons, and sliding to new positions. This demonstrates D3's nested update pattern with transitions, using `selection.data`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections. The code explicitly animates `transform` with `.transition().duration(1000)`, shrinks exiting circles to radius 0, and removes groups after 600ms. Data is an array of randomized fruit objects with `type` and `id`, rendered as SVG circles with `scaleOrdinal` color and radius scales.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern with transitions

A dynamic bowl of fruit demonstrates the General Update Pattern, showing circles appearing as apples, changing type to lemons, and disappearing over time. The visualization uses D3 v5's data join with object constancy via the `id` key, merging enter and update selections. Smooth transitions animate circle radii and x-positions over one second, while exit selections shrink to zero before removal. The `scaleOrdinal` scales map fruit types to colors and sizes for the SVG rendering.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern & Animated Transitions

This example demonstrates the general update pattern with animated transitions in D3 v5, showing a row of fruit circles that change over time. It displays five apples that shrink and disappear when eaten, while one apple transforms into a lemon through color and radius changes. The implementation uses d3.scaleOrdinal for mapping fruit types to colors and sizes, with selection.data() and enter/merge/exit selections to handle updates. SVG circles animate via transition().duration(1000) on attributes like cx and r, driven by timed render functions in index.js.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

The visualization shows a changing bowl of fruit as apples are eaten and one apple becomes a lemon, using the d3.js general update pattern to animate the enter, update, and exit states. It renders circles as SVG elements, with color and radius scales mapping fruit type to visual properties via `scaleOrdinal`. The code employs `transition().duration()` for smooth animations and `merge()` to combine entering and updating elements, while `exit()` shrinks removed fruits.
