This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with a "bowl of fruits" metaphor. Animated SVG circles represent apples and lemons, demonstrating enter, update, and exit selections as fruits are added, removed, or replaced over time. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, with d3.transition animating circle radii from zero to their target values. Each fruit is identified by a unique id from Math.random(), enabling accurate data-join updates, while text labels display each fruit’s type.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern, showing apples and lemons as circles that are added, removed, or converted to different types. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while data joins with key functions handle enter, update, and exit selections. SVG circles and text labels animate their radius changes via transition().duration(1000). The code uses d3.range to generate initial data and setTimeout to trigger state changes over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, animating changes to a dataset of circles as apples are eaten or replaced with lemons. The visualization shows how entering, updating, and exiting elements are handled distinctly, with new fruits scaling up from radius zero and removed fruits shrinking away. Using d3.selectAll and data joins, the code applies ordinal scales for color and radius, then transitions positions and sizes over one-second durations. Fruit identities persist through the data key function, ensuring stable updates as the array mutates over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern using animated transitions to manage changes in a dataset of fruit items. It shows how enter, update, and exit selections behave as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping based on fruit type, and applies transition().duration() to animate circle radius and position changes. The update flow is driven by JavaScript setTimeout calls that modify the fruits array and trigger re-rendering of the SVG circles.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing how a data set of apples and lemons is rendered as SVG circles and animated when items are added, removed, or changed. It uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` to map fruit types to colors and radii, and `d3.select` with chained `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods to transition circles smoothly. Animations are driven by `transition().duration(1000)` and triggered via `setTimeout`, while the data join keys on each fruit’s random `id`.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A dynamic SVG visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3 v5, where fruit appears as colored circles that grow, shrink, and change color as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. The fruitBowl module uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales, with enter, merge, and exit selections chained to transition.attr for smooth 1000-millisecond animations. Data updates triggered by setTimeout calls modify the fruits array, showing how keyed data joins handle additions, removals, and modifications while maintaining circle identity.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, showing apples and lemons rendered as colored circles that are added, removed, and changed over time. The visualization uses d3.select, data joins, and enter/merge/exit selections in the fruitBowl function, with d3.scaleOrdinal mapping fruit types to colors and radii. The SVG output updates through three timed transitions, first removing an apple, then changing an apple to a lemon, and finally filtering out another apple.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as items are added, removed, and modified. Initially five apples appear, then one is eaten, an apple is replaced by a lemon, and another apple is removed. The example uses D3's `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and transition system with `transition().duration()` to animate circle radii and colors, rendering in SVG. The code in `fruitBowl.js` shows enter, merge, and exit transitions, with each fruit assigned an `id` for key-based data joining.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

The visualization demonstrates the general update pattern with a bowl of fruit, where apples and lemons appear, change, and disappear over time. It tracks dynamic array updates, highlighting enter, update, and exit transitions across three timed changes. The code uses d3.select, scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, and the selection.enter, merge, and exit APIs. SVG circles and text labels render fruits, with transitions animating radius changes over one-second intervals.
