A dynamic SVG visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3 v5, where fruit appears as colored circles that grow, shrink, and change color as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. The fruitBowl module uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales, with enter, merge, and exit selections chained to transition.attr for smooth 1000-millisecond animations. Data updates triggered by setTimeout calls modify the fruits array, showing how keyed data joins handle additions, removals, and modifications while maintaining circle identity.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, animating changes to a dataset of circles as apples are eaten or replaced with lemons. The visualization shows how entering, updating, and exiting elements are handled distinctly, with new fruits scaling up from radius zero and removed fruits shrinking away. Using d3.selectAll and data joins, the code applies ordinal scales for color and radius, then transitions positions and sizes over one-second durations. Fruit identities persist through the data key function, ensuring stable updates as the array mutates over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern for animating SVG circles, where fruits (apples and lemons) appear as colored circles that grow, change color, and shrink when the underlying data array is modified. The visualization uses D3 v5's selection API with `.enter()`, `.merge()`, and `.exit()` methods to handle data changes, while `transition().duration(1000)` animates radius and x-position over one second. The code imports `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, and triggers updates via `setTimeout` to simulate eating and replacing fruit.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as items are added, removed, and modified. Initially five apples appear, then one is eaten, an apple is replaced by a lemon, and another apple is removed. The example uses D3's `select`, `scaleOrdinal`, and transition system with `transition().duration()` to animate circle radii and colors, rendering in SVG. The code in `fruitBowl.js` shows enter, merge, and exit transitions, with each fruit assigned an `id` for key-based data joining.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern, showing apples and lemons as circles that are added, removed, or converted to different types. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while data joins with key functions handle enter, update, and exit selections. SVG circles and text labels animate their radius changes via transition().duration(1000). The code uses d3.range to generate initial data and setTimeout to trigger state changes over time.

Bowl of Fruit- General Update pattern

This example demonstrates the D3.js general update pattern by animating a bowl of fruit, where apples are eaten, replaced with lemons, and removed over time. It uses D3 selections with enter, merge, and exit methods to manage dynamic data binding, rendering SVG circles and text elements via a reusable `fruitBowl` function. The visualization employs `d3.scaleOrdinal` to map fruit types to colors and radii, with the data driven by timed `setTimeout` callbacks that modify a hardcoded fruits array.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the general update pattern for animated data visualizations. A row of five apples is rendered as SVG circles, and over time, fruits are removed, one apple is transformed into a lemon, and another is deleted, all while the remaining fruits smoothly transition to their new positions using d3 transitions. The visualization uses a color scale and radial size scale mapped to fruit types via `scaleOrdinal()`, and the `fruitBowl` function manages the enter, update, and exit states through jQuery-style selection merging.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern with Bowl

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. The visualization renders circles and labels inside an SVG, using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping based on fruit type. Data updates are handled through enter, merge, and exit selections, with circles and text appended to groups. The bowl itself is a static rounded rectangle, while the fruit transitions are driven by timed state changes.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

An animated bowl of fruit demonstrates D3’s general update pattern, showing five fruits that disappear or change type over time. The SVG visualization uses a single reusable `fruitBowl` function, which binds data arrays to `g` groups via `selection.data()`, then handles enter, update, and exit selections with `enter().append()`, `merge()`, and `exit().remove()`. Fruit appearance relies on `scaleOrdinal` color and radius scales, while timed `setTimeout` calls trigger data mutations—removing apples or replacing one with a lemon—to illustrate smooth transitions in the rendered circles and labels.
