This interactive visualization generates abstract art inspired by Sol LeWitt, displaying grid-like patterns of thin horizontal and vertical rectangles. Pressing the up or down arrow keys changes the number of repeated art panels from 1 to 8, with the current count persisted in Local Storage. The SVG rendering uses D3’s `select`, `range`, `symbol`, and `symbols` to create each panel, while masks with inverted fills carve out distinct geometric symbols from the grid. The layout adapts to the viewport width, dividing it equally among the panels.

Sol

This interactive artwork reproduces a Sol LeWitt-inspired drawing using SVG. It displays a grid of vertical and horizontal lines that are partially revealed through a mask containing geometric symbols. The piece builds the composition by layering 100 rectangles in each orientation. The visualization uses D3.js, specifically the `select`, `range`, `symbols`, and `symbol` APIs, to generate the mask patterns and render the final image dynamically based on the browser window size.

sol lewit reproduction assignment

This visualization reproduces the geometric precision of Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings using D3.js, encoding alternating vertical and horizontal line grids. It renders a series of thin rectangles that are selectively masked by SVG masks containing paths of abstract symbols, creating overlapping patterns of positive and negative space. The code leverages D3’s `select`, `range`, `symbols`, and `symbol` APIs to generate the grids and symbol paths, with masks (`url(#mask0)`, etc.) toggling visibility. The result is a dynamic, screen-sized composition that mirrors LeWitt’s systematic, rule-based aesthetics through algorithmic drawing.

Sol LeWitt-Inspired Shapes

A generative art piece inspired by Sol LeWitt’s geometric wall drawings, this visualization fills the browser window with an SVG grid of randomly colored rectangles and vertical slats. The code uses D3 v7’s symbol generators and masks to alternately reveal or hide each shape within alternating columns, producing a woven, layered composition. The rendering logic relies on SVG `<mask>` elements, `d3.range`, and `d3.selectAll().join()` to construct both horizontal and vertical bands, with the mask patterns cycling through D3’s built-in symbol types. The result is a dynamic, self-contained pattern generated from deterministic geometry and random color values.

sol lewit reproduction

The visualization reproduces Sol LeWitt's geometric wall drawing style using horizontal and vertical striped rectangles layered and masked into circular and diamond-shaped forms. Built with D3 v7, it uses `select`, `range`, `join`, and `symbol` to generate SVG elements dynamically, with two masks (`#mask` and `#mask-2`) controlling visibility of the overlapping bands. The artwork renders at four times the window width, with dimensions derived from `window.innerWidth` and `window.innerHeight`, producing a large-scale, pattern-based composition.

Full Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

This interactive SVG reproduction of a Sol LeWitt piece uses D3 to generate a grid of horizontal and vertical stripes. The code defines two masks that selectively reveal or hide the stripes based on a series of symbol-shaped paths, creating a dynamic and layered geometric composition. The program uses D3's `select`, `range`, `symbol`, and `symbols` functions to build the SVG elements and masks, with the rendering adapting to the window size. The artwork's behavior is driven entirely by the mask transformations and symbol generation.

Sol LeWitt

This example displays 50 vertical rectangles arranged in a repeating grid, filling the browser window with a pattern inspired by Sol LeWitt’s minimalist art. Each rectangle is positioned at an x-coordinate of 20 times its index, with a fixed width of 10 and a height equal to the full viewport. The visualization uses the SVG namespace and dynamically creates elements via `document.createElementNS`, setting width and height attributes from `window.innerWidth` and `window.innerHeight`. The code appends all shapes to a single SVG container without any interaction or data-driven updates.

Full LS Sol Lewitt Reproduction

This visualization reproduces a Sol LeWitt-inspired drawing through a geometric grid of narrow black and white rectangular stripes, with circular masks creating a layered pattern. Built using D3 v7, the code generates two sets of 100 horizontal and vertical lines using `selectAll` and `range`, then applies SVG masks (`mask-1`, `mask-2`) that combine a large circle and a symbol path generated via `symbol(symbols[0], 125000)()` to selectively reveal or hide the stripes across the viewport. The result is an interactive, fullscreen generative art piece that fills the browser window with a rhythmic, screen-printed aesthetic.

Sol LeWitt Episode 4 Practice

This visualization reproduces Sol LeWitt’s geometric drawing practice by overlaying two sets of thin, evenly spaced rectangles—horizontal and vertical—to form a grid across the full viewport. Using D3.js, the code creates 100 rectangles in each direction, with masks applied to selectively reveal or hide portions of the grid. Two custom masks, defined via SVG, use D3 symbols (circle, cross, diamond, square, star, triangle, and wye) to punch out or block shapes at the center, creating an inverted interplay between the two layers. The result is a clean, algorithmic composition that echoes LeWitt’s wall-drawing aesthetics through simple SVG primitives and data-driven iteration.
