This interactive artwork reproduces a Sol LeWitt-inspired drawing using SVG. It displays a grid of vertical and horizontal lines that are partially revealed through a mask containing geometric symbols. The piece builds the composition by layering 100 rectangles in each orientation. The visualization uses D3.js, specifically the `select`, `range`, `symbols`, and `symbol` APIs, to generate the mask patterns and render the final image dynamically based on the browser window size.

Other Sol LeWitt Reproductions

This example reproduces a Sol LeWitt drawing as an interactive SVG artwork. It shows a grid of thin horizontal and vertical lines that remain fully visible except within two circular masks, which appear as a black circle and a white circle, creating a layered cutout effect. The piece uses the D3 library, specifically its `select`, `range`, `symbols`, and `symbol` functions, to generate 100 horizontal and vertical rectangles. Two masks are rendered via the `renderMask` function, which employs D3’s SVG path rendering for the circle shapes, with one mask inverted to produce the contrasting visual result.

Sol witte complete selection

This example reproduces a Sol LeWitt-inspired geometric composition using SVG. It displays a grid of horizontal and vertical rectangles that are partially obscured by two overlapping masks: one reveals a large diamond shape, while the other hides a circle in the center. The code uses D3.js version 6.6.1 with selections and the `join()` method to generate the rectangles, and the `d3.symbol` API to draw the diamond path. The result combines structured linework with negative space, mimicking the artist’s minimalist aesthetic.

sol lewit reproduction assignment

This visualization reproduces the geometric precision of Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings using D3.js, encoding alternating vertical and horizontal line grids. It renders a series of thin rectangles that are selectively masked by SVG masks containing paths of abstract symbols, creating overlapping patterns of positive and negative space. The code leverages D3’s `select`, `range`, `symbols`, and `symbol` APIs to generate the grids and symbol paths, with masks (`url(#mask0)`, etc.) toggling visibility. The result is a dynamic, screen-sized composition that mirrors LeWitt’s systematic, rule-based aesthetics through algorithmic drawing.

Full Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

This interactive SVG reproduction of a Sol LeWitt piece uses D3 to generate a grid of horizontal and vertical stripes. The code defines two masks that selectively reveal or hide the stripes based on a series of symbol-shaped paths, creating a dynamic and layered geometric composition. The program uses D3's `select`, `range`, `symbol`, and `symbols` functions to build the SVG elements and masks, with the rendering adapting to the window size. The artwork's behavior is driven entirely by the mask transformations and symbol generation.

Sol LeWitt Reproduction D3

This D3.js reproduction of a Sol LeWitt art piece uses two sets of alternating horizontal and vertical grid lines made of thin rectangles, each set partially hidden by a circular mask. The first mask reveals a white circle on a black background, while the second shows the inverse, creating a visual interplay between the two line orientations. Built with the d3 `select`, `range`, and `symbols` APIs, the SVG rendering fills the entire browser window and uses 100 lines in each direction. The piece references LeWitt’s geometric wall drawings, translating his grid-based concept into dynamic, screen-filling linework.

Sol LeWitt

This example reproduces a Sol LeWitt-inspired geometric drawing using SVG. A series of 100 horizontal rectangles, each 10 pixels tall and spaced 20 pixels apart, render across the full screen width. A circular mask centered on the viewport clips these rectangles, revealing only the lines inside the circle. The visualization uses plain JavaScript to create SVG elements dynamically, with no external libraries, and responds to the browser window’s dimensions for sizing.

Full Sol LeWitt Reproduction with D3

This visualization reproduces a Sol LeWitt wall drawing using D3.js, rendering a grid of horizontal and vertical lines that intersect to form a subtle pattern across the full browser viewport. The piece relies on two SVG masks—one circular and one rectangular—to selectively reveal or hide portions of the line arrays. Specifically, a path generated via `symbol(symbols[1],100000)` creates a large circular mask over the vertical lines, while a black circle mask obscures the horizontal lines in a contrasting region. The code uses D3’s `select`, `range`, and `join` APIs to efficiently append hundreds of SVG rect elements, with all rendering performed client-side in SVG format.

Sol LeWitt Reproduction

This visualization uses raw SVG and JavaScript to reproduce a Sol LeWitt wall drawing. It layers 100 horizontal and 100 vertical rectangular stripes across the full browser window. A circular mask, created via SVG `mask` and `circle` elements, is applied only to the horizontal lines, revealing them solely within a central 200-pixel radius. The code dynamically sizes the artwork to the viewport dimensions, using `document.createElementNS` and `setAttribute` to build the composition without any external libraries.
