A bowl of five apples appears as circles, then shrinks and disappears as one is eaten. A middle apple’s fill and radius transition from red to yellow as it becomes a lemon, demonstrating the general update pattern with enter, update, and exit selections. The example uses D3 v5’s `selection.merge`, `transition.attr`, and ordinal `scaleOrdinal` for colors and radii, with SVG circles redistributing horizontally via a computed `cx` position. Data updates are triggered by `setTimeout` after initial rendering from a `range(5)` array.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples appear as red circles in a row, then shrink and disappear as they are removed one by one. One apple turns yellow and becomes a lemon, demonstrating how data updates map to visual changes. The example implements the general update pattern using `selection.data()`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections. D3 transitions animate radius changes over one second, with `scaleOrdinal` mapping fruit types to colors and sizes in an SVG.

Bowl of fruit - General update pattern

Five red apples appear in a row, then disappear one by one. After a moment, the middle apple turns into a yellow lemon, demonstrating a general update pattern with enter, update, and exit selections. Using d3.v6 with SVG, the example applies d3.scaleOrdinal for both fill color and radius, binding fruit data to circles, and merging selections on each render. The code explicitly calls `selection.enter`, `.merge`, and `.exit` to manage the transition from five apples to four apples to four mixed fruits.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples render as red circles in an SVG bowl, then update through three timed steps: one apple exits, one turns yellow as a lemon, and another is removed. D3’s data join manages enter, update, and exit selections, using `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, with `transition().duration(1000)` animating position and size changes.

Bowl of fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples appear in a row, then shrink and vanish as they are eaten, while one apple transforms into a lemon through a color and size change. This demonstrates d3's general update pattern using `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` selections with `transition.attr` to animate circle radii and positions. The fruit types map to color and radius scales, with data bound by unique `id` keys. SVG circles render the bowl of fruit, and `setTimeout` calls trigger the staged updates over three seconds.

Bowl o' Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five apples appear as circles in an SVG bowl, then one is removed after a second, and a middle apple converts into a lemon after two seconds. The example demonstrates the general update pattern for dynamic data. It uses d3.v5's selection methods, including `enter`, `merge`, `exit`, and `transition`, with ordinal scales for color and radius, and SVG elements for rendering.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Patter

Five apples appear in a row as red circles, then one disappears when the data array shrinks, and a later apple turns yellow to become a lemon. The example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern using `selection.enter()`, `selection.exit()`, and the merge of new and existing elements. It uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings based on fruit type, with `setTimeout` calls to trigger the data changes. Rendering targets an SVG canvas via D3 v5.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five colored apples sit in a row inside an SVG, then transform through a sequence of update operations: one apple disappears, another changes to a lemon, and a third is removed. This demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, where data joins drive enter, update, and exit selections. The code uses `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius, `selection.merge()`, and `transition().duration(1000)` to animate changes smoothly.

Bowl of fruit : General Update pattern

A bowl of five apples demonstrates the D3 General Update pattern, where entering, updating, and exiting circles animate smoothly as the data changes. Over time, apples are removed, one apple transforms into a lemon, and another is filtered out, with each transition using `transition().duration(1000)` to adjust radius and position. The example uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales, and d3-selection’s `data` with a key function on fruit IDs to manage DOM elements. Rendered as SVG via d3.v5.
