Five apples appear as circles in a row. Over time, the dataset is modified: one fruit is removed, another changes type to a lemon, and a third is filtered out. D3's SVG circle elements animate their position and radius, with color and size scaling based on fruit type. The `transition` API handles the smooth changes in position, radius, and removal.

Intro to Transitions

Five circles representing fruit transition smoothly as they are added, updated, and removed. The example demonstrates D3's data join with enter, update, and exit selections. Using d3.transition with a one-second duration, each circle's radius, fill color, and x-position animate via attribute interpolation. The code uses scaleOrdinal for categorical color and radius mapping, and random IDs to track elements as apples are replaced by lemons and removed over timed intervals.

bowl off fruit click

Five circles, designed as apples and lemons, are shown in an SVG canvas. The visualization demonstrates D3 transitions as the dataset changes over time: a fruit is removed, an apple transforms into a lemon, and another fruit is deleted. The code uses D3's `selectAll`, `data`, and `transition` APIs to animate circle radius and x-position over two-second durations. Each circle has a click handler that logs to the console, and the color and size are mapped via `scaleOrdinal` based on the fruit type. The data is generated programmatically with `Math.random` for unique identifiers.

of Fruit - Animated Transitions

Animated fruit bowl circles transition smoothly between states as apples are eaten or replaced by lemons. Using D3 v5 with SVG rendering, circles enter and exit by animating their radius from zero to its final value, while updates transition both position and size. The d3 selection join pattern with object constancy via id tracks individual fruits across data changes. Color and radius are mapped through d3.scaleOrdinal with transition durations of one second.

Bowl of Fruit - Animated Transitions

Five circles representing apples and lemons animate in a bowl-like row using SVG. Entering circles grow from radius zero, exiting circles shrink to zero, and existing circles transition their position, size, and color via d3-transition. The example demonstrates key-based data joins and ordinal color and radius scales in d3 v5.

Bowl of Fruit: Animated Transitions

Five circles representing apples appear in a row, rendered as SVG circles with a red fill. Over two seconds, one fruit is removed and a middle apple transitions to a lemon, changing its color to yellow and shrinking its radius. The example uses d3 v5 with selection joins, `.enter()`, `.exit()`, and scaleOrdinal for color and size mappings, demonstrating basic animated data updates.

Data join and Transition

This example demonstrates the data join pattern with animated transitions in D3 v5, showing how circles representing fruit enter, update, and exit. Starting with five apples, the visualization removes a fruit after one second, changes the third fruit's type to lemon at two seconds, and filters out another item at three seconds. Each change triggers a smooth 1-second transition where new circles grow from radius zero, existing circles adjust their color, size, and position, and removed circles shrink away. The code uses `selection.data()`, `selection.enter()`, `selection.merge()`, and `selection.exit()` with `transition().duration()` for the animations, along with `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping.

FruitBowl Example

Five circles representing apples appear in a row, then transition through a sequence of updates: one fruit is removed, a middle apple changes into a lemon, and another circle exits, all with smooth one-second animations. The example uses D3 v5 with `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, plus `selection.enter`, `merge`, and `exit` with `transition` and `attr` to animate circle positions and sizes. Data is generated with `range` and `Math.random` IDs, rendered as SVG in a fixed 960×500 viewport.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern - transitions

Five circles representing fruit in a bowl transition between states using D3.js's general update pattern. The SVG visualization begins with five apples, which are removed, replaced with a lemon, and filtered over time. The animation uses keyed data with `transition().duration(1000)` to animate radius changes while color is set via an ordinal color scale mapping apple and lemon types to distinct colors.
