A dynamic fruit bowl updates through sequential data changes, showing apples and lemons as colored circles with labels inside a brown rectangular container. Using D3 v5 with SVG rendering, the example demonstrates nested elements where each fruit group contains a circle and text element. The visualization uses a scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, while data joins with enter/merge/exit patterns handle transitions when fruits are removed or change type.

Nested Elements with transition

A sequence of fruit data animates a brown SVG bowl containing apples and lemons. The visualization uses d3 selections and merge operations to transition nested elements: circles and text labels appear, reposition, or disappear as the data array changes over time. The code applies d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, and d3.select for SVG element manipulation, with explicit exit and enter selections driving the animated state changes.

Nested Elements

A fruit bowl rendered in SVG shows a row of apples and a lemon, with each fruit as a circle inside a rounded rectangle. D3’s `scaleOrdinal` maps fruit types to circle radii and fill colors, while `merge` and `transition().duration(1000)` animate changes to the fruit data. Over three seconds, the visualization removes an apple, swaps an apple for a lemon, and deletes another apple, demonstrating how D3’s selection API handles nested elements and dynamic updates.

Nested Logic

This example demonstrates a dynamic fruit bowl visualization where circles and labels are bound to an array of fruit objects. It shows how updates to the data—removing items or changing a fruit’s type from apple to lemon—trigger animated transitions in position, radius, and color. The code uses d3’s `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, and the enter-merge-exit pattern to manage SVG groups. The visualization is rendered with React and D3 v5, with timed `setTimeout` calls driving the data mutations.

Nested Elements

This example demonstrates a dynamic fruit bowl visualization where apples and lemons appear, disappear, and change type over time. Using D3 v5’s `select`, `range`, `scaleOrdinal`, and custom component-style functions like `fruitBowl`, the SVG renders circles and text labels, with color and radius scales mapping fruit types to visual properties. The React-inspired component pattern merges enter, update, and exit selections to handle data changes smoothly, while timed `setTimeout` calls trigger data mutations that update the scene.

Nested Elements Animated

This example demonstrates animated transitions for a set of fruit items, where apples and lemons are represented as colored circles with labels, scaling in and out as items are added, removed, or modified over time. Built with D3 v6 and using the `select`, `range`, and `scaleOrdinal` APIs, the visualization applies a custom `transition().duration(1000)` to animate the `transform` attribute for scale effects. The data is a simple in-memory array of fruit objects, and rendering uses SVG elements (`g`, `circle`, `text`) managed through D3’s selection and merge operations.

Fruit - Update Pattern - Nested, Transitions

A bowl of fruit changes over time as apples are removed and one apple transforms into a lemon. The visualization demonstrates the D3 update pattern with nested elements. It uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius, and applies d3.transition to animate position changes over 1200 milliseconds. Exit transitions shrink removed fruits over 500 milliseconds. The SVG rendering is driven by a custom fruitBowl function that merges entering and existing groups.

D3 Bowl of Fruit - With Nested Elements

This example demonstrates dynamic data updates with nested SVG elements, rendering apples and lemons in a rounded bowl shape. The visualization uses d3-selection's enter/merge/exit pattern within a custom `fruitBowl` function, updating fruit positions and styles as the data array changes over timed intervals. The code leverages `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, and binds fruit data to `<g>` groups containing nested `<circle>` and `<text>` elements. The animation cycles through removing, modifying, adding, and filtering fruits to show how joins handle each change.

12.c - fruit bowl - d3 update pattern, nested elements w/ transitions - dataviz 2018

A fruit bowl visualization demonstrates the D3 update pattern for nested elements with transitions. The SVG scene shows apples and lemons positioned inside a bowl, with fruits entering, exiting, and changing type over time. Using d3.select, d3.range, and d3.scaleOrdinal, the code manages enter, update, and exit states via selection.transition().duration(), animating circle radii, fill colors, and text opacity. The example uses fruitGroups.select('circle') and fruitGroups.select('text') to handle sub-elements independently, with Math.random() generating unique IDs for data tracking.
