EdX Viewership 2013: Adding Dropdowns
This example maps the geographic distribution of video views in HarvardX/MITx online courses from 2013. Circles sized by view count are projected onto a world map using `d3.geoMercator` and `d3.geoPath`, with graticules and country interiors drawn from World Atlas TopoJSON. The visualization includes dropdown menus to filter data by course and institution, though filtering logic and tooltips are not yet implemented. Data comes from a CSV file loaded via `d3.csv`, and the React component structure uses hooks like `useState` and `useEffect` alongside d3 scales for sizing.
AI-generated descriptionOk - now we've got the larger data set fed into the viz, and not the pre-aggregated dataset. The goal now is to get the number of views per country to show up in the tooltip. I'd also like to add a drop down menu so we can filter by course and institution.
This is a visualization of the Harvardx/MITx Course-Person Dataset for the academic year 2013. The data shows the number of video views of the online courses, represented by the circles on the map. The data can be found here.

The world map behind the points is a Mercator type map using the World Atlas TopoJSON. The points are off by a small fraction (down and to the left) however it fits much better on the Mercator projection over the Natural Earth projection. When the user hovers over each point, they can see the latitude and logitude of that deployment.
