A dynamic bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern for handling data changes. Simulated fruit purchases add apples and transform them into lemons, with each change triggering animated updates. The visualization renders SVG circles with size and color scales mapped to fruit type. D3 v5's join operation manages enter, update, and exit transitions, animating positional shifts and radius changes over 500 milliseconds.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern, animating changes to a dataset of circles as apples are eaten or replaced with lemons. The visualization shows how entering, updating, and exiting elements are handled distinctly, with new fruits scaling up from radius zero and removed fruits shrinking away. Using d3.selectAll and data joins, the code applies ordinal scales for color and radius, then transitions positions and sizes over one-second durations. Fruit identities persist through the data key function, ensuring stable updates as the array mutates over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A dynamic SVG visualization demonstrates the general update pattern in D3 v5, where fruit appears as colored circles that grow, shrink, and change color as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. The fruitBowl module uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius scales, with enter, merge, and exit selections chained to transition.attr for smooth 1000-millisecond animations. Data updates triggered by setTimeout calls modify the fruits array, showing how keyed data joins handle additions, removals, and modifications while maintaining circle identity.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern, showing apples and lemons as circles that are added, removed, or converted to different types. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while data joins with key functions handle enter, update, and exit selections. SVG circles and text labels animate their radius changes via transition().duration(1000). The code uses d3.range to generate initial data and setTimeout to trigger state changes over time.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3’s general update pattern for animated data joins. Circles represent apples and lemons, colored via a `scaleOrdinal` and sized by another. Each update transitions entering, updating, and exiting circles using `transition().duration(1000)`, shrinking exits to zero radius before removal. The example cycles through adding, removing, and mutating fruit types with `setTimeout`, showing how D3’s `selection.data` with a key function manages dynamic datasets. Rendering uses SVG in a static 960×500 viewport.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern as apples and lemons appear, disappear, and change type over time. The visualization uses D3 v5’s `selectAll`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods to handle data joins, with `scaleOrdinal` mapping fruit types to colors and radii. SVG circles and text elements within groups are updated, while a static rectangle represents the bowl. State changes trigger re-renders via `setTimeout`, showing how joins manage dynamic datasets.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3.js, showing how data joins handle entering, updating, and exiting elements as fruits are added, removed, or modified. Animated transitions move apples and lemons across an SVG canvas, with circles and text labels updating their positions and colors. The code uses d3.select, data joins with key functions, and transition().duration() to animate changes. Fruit types are mapped to colors and radii via scaleOrdinal, with a static bowl rendered as a rectangle.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the general update pattern's special cases in D3 v5, showing how data joins handle adding, removing, and modifying elements. The visualization updates five apples over time: an apple disappears, another becomes a lemon, and a third is filtered out. Using SVG, the code employs `selection.enter()`, `selection.merge()`, and `selection.exit()` to manage circles and text, with `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping. The `fruitBowl` function binds fruit data to groups, updating their transforms and attributes automatically.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern with Bowl

This example demonstrates the general update pattern in D3, showing a bowl of fruit that changes over time as apples are eaten and replaced with lemons. The visualization renders circles and labels inside an SVG, using `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping based on fruit type. Data updates are handled through enter, merge, and exit selections, with circles and text appended to groups. The bowl itself is a static rounded rectangle, while the fruit transitions are driven by timed state changes.
