A bowl of circles represents fruits in a D3.js animation demonstrating the general update pattern. Apples and lemons appear as colored circles with distinct sizes, rendered as SVG elements with smooth 1-second transitions. Users hover over fruits to highlight them with a teal stroke and click to select. The code uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, d3.selectAll with data joins for enter, update, and exit phases, and d3.transition for animated state changes.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3's general update pattern, showing apples and lemons as circles that are added, removed, or converted to different types. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, while data joins with key functions handle enter, update, and exit selections. SVG circles and text labels animate their radius changes via transition().duration(1000). The code uses d3.range to generate initial data and setTimeout to trigger state changes over time.

Bowl of Fruit- General Update pattern

A bowl of fruit rendered as SVG circles demonstrates D3.js's general update pattern, managing enter, update, and exit selections as apples are eaten, replaced, and removed over timed intervals. The code uses `d3.select`, `selection.data` with key functions, and chained `.transition()` calls to animate radius changes, while `scaleOrdinal` maps fruit types to colors and sizes. Apples appear red, lemons yellow, and each fruit’s unique `id` key tracks individual elements during updates.

Bowl Fruits General Updates Pattern

This example demonstrates the General Update Pattern in D3 v5, showing how a bowl of fruits—apples and lemons—changes over time through enter, update, and exit selections. Circles animate in with a radius transition, update their fill color and size based on fruit type, and animate out when removed. The `d3.scaleOrdinal` maps fruit types to colors and radii, while mouseover and mouseout events highlight the selected fruit with a teal stroke via `setSelectedFruit`. Animated transitions use `transition().duration()` with SVG circles.

Bowl of fruit general update pattern

A D3.js animation demonstrates the general update pattern by rendering a bowl of fruit as colored circles that appear, change, and disappear over time. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mappings, while `selection.data`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` manage the lifecycle of SVG elements. Transitions animate circle radius changes when apples are replaced by lemons or removed. The visualization shows fundamental DOM manipulation with a simple dataset and timed intervals.

Bowl of fruit General Update Pattern

A bowl of fruit demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with animated enter, update, and exit transitions for circles. Apples and lemons render as colored SVG circles using ordinal color and radius scales, with positions determined by index. The code uses `selection.data`, `enter`, `merge`, and `exit` methods alongside `transition().duration()` to smoothly resize and reposition elements as fruits are removed and types changed over timed intervals.

Bowl of fruits- General Update Pattern

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with a "bowl of fruits" metaphor. Animated SVG circles represent apples and lemons, demonstrating enter, update, and exit selections as fruits are added, removed, or replaced over time. The visualization uses d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius mapping, with d3.transition animating circle radii from zero to their target values. Each fruit is identified by a unique id from Math.random(), enabling accurate data-join updates, while text labels display each fruit’s type.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern Special Cases With Animation

A bowl of fruit demonstrates D3’s General Update Pattern with animated enter, update, and exit stages. Multiple apples and lemons are drawn as SVG circles with text labels, using d3.scaleOrdinal for color and radius. The example uses selection.merge and transition.duration to animate position and radius changes when fruits are added, removed, or replaced over timed intervals.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern.js

This example demonstrates the D3 general update pattern with a bowl of fruit represented as colored circles. Apples appear and disappear, and one apple transforms into a lemon, while all changes animate smoothly over one second. The code uses d3.select, d3.range, scaleOrdinal for color and radius mappings, and transition().duration() with .attr() and .remove() to handle enter, update, and exit selections. Data consists of objects with type and id properties, rendered as SVG circles.
