Untitled

A world map rendered in the Mercator projection displays country boundaries as grey paths with thin white strokes. The example demonstrates loading GeoJSON-derived topology data from a local `world-110m2.json` file and converting it to SVG paths using `d3.geoPath`. The map is centered and rotated with `d3.geoMercator` and `projection.rotate`, and country features are extracted via `topojson.feature` from the TopoJSON library. The page uses D3 v7 to fetch the data asynchronously with `d3.json` and append the resulting paths to an SVG container.

Untitled

This example displays a world map rendered as SVG paths, with each country filled in grey and stroked with white. The visualization uses a Mercator projection centered on the equator, configured via `d3.geoMercator` with a custom scale and rotation. The code loads US Atlas topology data from a remote JSON file and uses `topojson.feature` to extract country boundaries, which are then drawn with `d3.geoPath`. The SVG container is created using `d3.select` and appended to the document body.

Loading Data with React & D3

This example demonstrates loading external data through the D3 utility `d3.csv`, which fetches a CSV file from a GitHub Gist and stores the result in React state via the `useState` and `useEffect` hooks. Once the data arrives, the app renders a `<pre>` element displaying summary statistics in the browser, including file size in kilobytes, row count, and column count. The visualization uses React for state management and D3 v5 for CSV parsing, with the output shown as plain text rather than a chart.

Mouse Follower

A circle follows the mouse cursor across a large SVG canvas, updating its position in real time based on pointer movement. The example uses React state and the `useState` and `useCallback` hooks to track the mouse coordinates, passing them to the SVG circle’s `cx` and `cy` attributes. Rendering is handled via ReactDOM, with the SVG element listening for `onMouseMove` events to trigger position updates.

Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates the basic process of loading and parsing CSV data by displaying the file size, row count, and column count of a remote dataset. It fetches a CSV file from a GitHub Gist using the `fetch` API, then parses it with `d3.csv` and re-formats it with `d3.csvFormat` to compute the kilobyte size. The parsed data’s dimensions are displayed in large text within a `<pre>` element. The code also includes an alternative commented-out approach using `d3.csvParse` on raw text.

Smilie Face Part 1

Ten identical smiley faces are arranged in a vertical column, each rendered as a yellow circle with black stroke, two eyes, and a mouth. The visualization demonstrates component-based reuse in React, where the `Face` component composes `BackgroundCircle`, `Eyes`, and `Mouth` subcomponents. The mouth uses d3’s `arc` API to generate a path, and the entire face is rendered into an SVG via React’s `ReactDOM.render`. The code creates a fixed array of ten faces, each with identical properties, forming a simple repeated pattern.

Fork of Smiley Face Part V

A React-based smiley face is composed from modular SVG components for the background circle, eyes, and mouth. The mouth is generated using d3's `arc` generator to create a curved path. The visualization demonstrates component splitting across files with ES6 modules and React Fragments, rendering a static decorative graphic in SVG format with ReactDOM.

SVG Fundamentals

This example demonstrates core SVG fundamentals using concentric circles stacked at the center of a 1000×1000 canvas. The circles decrease in radius from 100 to 50 pixels, each with a distinct fill color ranging from tan to salmon. The visualization also includes a black polyline path drawn from point (400,600) through (700,600) to (600,700). The code directly uses SVG elements like `<circle>` and `<path>` within plain HTML, with additional commented-out examples of `<rect>`, `<line>`, and other path configurations.

Fork of Fork of Interactive Visualization (Brush) - Earthquake Data

This interactive dashboard combines a bar chart, a world map, and a scatter plot to explore earthquake data from 2000 to 2021. The bar chart shows the mean yearly earthquake magnitude, while the world map, built with `d3.geoPath` and a Mercator projection, plots earthquake epicenters with circle radii scaled by Richter magnitude. A linked scatter plot uses `d3.select` to display year against magnitude, with point size representing deaths. The map also includes tooltips on hover, and the data for the bar chart is loaded from a CSV file.

Fork of Interactive Visualization (Brush) - Earthquake Data

This visualization of earthquake data combines a bar plot, world map, and scatter plot to explore regional deaths, epicenter locations with Richter magnitudes, and the relationship between year, magnitude, and casualties. Users can brush on the scatter plot to filter the other views by year. The map uses d3.geoMercator with d3.geoPath to render world geography, while tooltips display country names on hover. All charts are built with d3.v7, rendering as SVG with animation, and the data is loaded from an external CSV source.

Fork of Interactive Visualization (Two Menus) - Earthquake Data

This interactive visualization displays earthquake data from the 20th century using a bar plot and a world map. The bar plot shows total deaths by region, while the map uses circle radius to represent earthquake magnitude on the Richter scale. Users select start and end years from two drop-down menus, which updates both visualizations. The code uses D3 v7 with SVG rendering, including d3.geoMercator projection, d3.scaleLinear and d3.scaleBand scales, and tooltip interactions for the map. Data comes from a GeoJSON world map and an external earthquake dataset.

SVG Fundamentals

This example demonstrates the fundamental building blocks of SVG, showing how basic shapes, styling, and coordinate systems come together to create static vector graphics. The code uses plain SVG elements like `<circle>`, `<rect>`, and `<path>` with CSS properties such as `fill` and `stroke` to define appearance. It relies on the built-in browser DOM API for SVG manipulation, with no external visualization libraries. The example, rendered via a React starter template, provides a bare-bones HTML page structure for learning how SVG integrates with web technologies.
