Customizing Axes

This horizontal bar chart displays the populations of ten countries, with bars sorted by value and customized axes. The chart uses d3.csv to load data, d3.scaleLinear and d3.scaleBand for positioning, and d3.axisLeft plus d3.axisBottom for ticks. Axis customization includes removing domain lines, adding gridlines via tickSize, and formatting tick labels with d3.format to abbreviate values (e.g., converting G to B). A title and axis label are appended as SVG text elements.

import reorder.js

This visualization demonstrates matrix reordering to reveal clusters in network connectivity data. It loads a TSV file from GitHub, converts the edge list into an adjacency matrix, and applies the barycenter heuristic from the reorder.js library to permute rows and columns, grouping connected nodes. D3.js fetches the data and constructs the matrix, while the reorder.js functions `mat2graph`, `barycenter_order`, `permute`, and `transpose` handle the optimization. The resulting grid displays ones for existing links, with reordering making dense connection patterns visually apparent.

Iris Parallel Coordinate

This visualization displays the classic Iris dataset as a parallel coordinate plot, with each flower’s four measurements (sepal length/width, petal length/width) drawn as a polyline across four vertical axes. Each line is color-coded by species using a D3 ordinal scale. The chart supports interactive dragging of any axis to reorder dimensions, with paths smoothly transitioning to the new layout via D3 transitions. All rendering is done with SVG elements, and the code leverages d3.scalePoint, d3.scaleLinear, d3.drag, and d3.axisLeft.

Iris Scatter Plot

This interactive scatter plot displays the classic Iris dataset, allowing users to compare any two of the four flower measurements (sepal length/width, petal length/width) by selecting them from dropdown menus. Each of the 150 data points is rendered as a colored circle, with hue indicating one of three Iris species. The visualization uses D3 v5’s `scaleLinear`, `axisBottom`, and `axisLeft` for axes, while `transition().duration().delay().attr()` animates the circles smoothly to their new positions when the axis selection changes. The legend and axis dropdowns are placed beside the plot.

Cars Scatter Plot

A scatter plot visualizes the relationship between horsepower and weight for cars from the UCI Machine Learning Repository’s Auto MPG data set. Each red, semi-transparent circle represents a car, revealing a positive correlation between the two variables. The visualization uses D3 v5 APIs including `csv`, `scaleLinear`, `axisBottom`, `axisLeft`, and `extent` to load data, map scales, and render axes. The SVG chart includes labeled axes, a title, and a grid of tick lines, rendered entirely client-side.

Making a bar chart

This example shows a horizontal bar chart of population estimates for ten countries, using a CSV data file. The bars are rendered as SVG rectangles with a steelblue fill, and the chart includes left and bottom axes. The code uses D3 v5’s `csv`, `scaleLinear`, `scaleBand`, `axisLeft`, and `axisBottom` to load data, map population values to widths, and position country labels. Population numbers are read as strings and converted to numeric values before scaling.

Making a smiling face

A yellow circle with black outlines forms a smiling face, featuring two eyes, curved eyebrows drawn as arc paths, and a wide, open smile created with a D3 arc generator. The entire composition is centered within an SVG using a group transform. The eyebrows animate via chained `transition().duration(2000)` calls, shifting their vertical position up and down in a continuous loop. The visualization uses D3 v5 selections and the `arc()` shape generator, rendering static SVG elements with JavaScript-driven animation.

Shapes with SVG and CSS

This example demonstrates basic SVG shapes—circles, rectangles, lines, and a path—arranged on a red background. It shows how SVG elements can be styled with inline attributes, grouped using the `<g>` element, and transformed with the `translate` attribute. The code uses plain React to render the SVG markup and relies on CSS for the page’s background color. It also illustrates applying stroke properties like `stroke-width` to grouped lines and paths, showcasing fundamental vector graphics composition without external libraries.
