This visualization shows the development history of the D3.js ecosystem by rendering each D3 repository as a smoothed streamgraph layer, where layer thickness represents the number of weekly commits over time. The layers are ordered by the time of each repository’s first commit, revealing the monolithic early development period, the package explosion around the 4.0 release, and later concentrated efforts on specific packages. The code uses d3.stack with stackOffsetWiggle and stackOrderAppearance for the streamgraph layout, array-blur for smoothing, and d3-area-label for labeling. Data comes from a JSON file of all D3 commits, rendered as SVG paths with axis ticks and hover effects.
