This visualization shows the global spread of COVID-19 as of August 2020, displaying confirmed cases, deaths, and recoveries by country on an interactive map. It uses the ArcGIS API 4.15 with two FeatureLayers—one for confirmed cases and one for deaths—rendered over a gray basemap. Popups provide detailed field information, while widgets for legends, bookmarks, and basemap selection are embedded in expandable panels. The data comes from a Kaggle dataset covering daily 2020 records through April 26.

Cheap Tricks for Interaction

This example shows an interactive world map rendered with SVG, where hovering over a country highlights it in red and zooming is enabled through mouse or touch gestures. The visualization uses D3 v5’s `d3.zoom` to apply a transform to a group element, while countries are drawn using `d3.geoPath` with a natural Earth projection. Geographic data comes from the world-atlas TopoJSON and TSV files, which supply country boundaries and names for tooltips.
