Loading Data with React & D3

This example demonstrates how to load and summarize a CSV dataset within a React application, displaying the data’s size, row count, and column count as text. It uses D3’s `csv` function to fetch data from a remote GitHub gist, while React’s `useState` and `useEffect` hooks manage the loading state and trigger the asynchronous request. The rendered output updates from a “Loading...” message to the computed statistics once the data arrives, with the message formatted using `d3.csvFormat` and JavaScript string concatenation.

Loading CSV Data

This example demonstrates loading a CSV file from a remote URL and displaying a concise summary of its contents, including file size in kilobytes, row count, and column count. The visualization fetches data from a GitHub gist containing CSS named colors, then uses the D3.js v7 `d3.csv` method to parse the text. The resulting message is rendered in a large `<pre>` element, showcasing the parsed data's dimensions without any graphical charts or plots.

Following Circle

A circle follows the mouse cursor across an SVG canvas, updating its position in real time as the pointer moves. The visualization uses React's `useState` and `useCallback` hooks to track mouse coordinates via the `onMouseMove` event, then re-renders a `<circle>` element at the new location. The code defines a fixed canvas size of 960 by 500 pixels and a circle radius of 40, with the initial position centered. It demonstrates a simple interactive component built with React’s declarative rendering approach for SVG graphics.

Smiley Faces

The visualization displays a grid of 18 randomly generated smiley faces rendered as SVG elements. Each face features a yellow circular head, black stroke outline, two eyes, and a mouth drawn using a d3 arc path. The code uses React components, d3 v7, and the `arc()` API to construct each facial feature. Slight random variations in stroke width, eye offset, eye radius, and mouth dimensions make every face subtly unique.
