This example uses D3 v7 to draw a simple smiley face on an SVG canvas. It appends a yellow circle for the face and two smaller black circles for the eyes, positioning them relative to the SVG’s width and height attributes. The code uses `d3.select` to target the SVG element and the `.attr()` method to set circle properties such as radius, center coordinates, fill color, and stroke. Eye spacing and vertical offset are defined as numeric constants, and all geometry is computed dynamically from the SVG’s dimensions.

This example presents a minimal, blank SVG canvas rendered within a React application, demonstrating the foundational setup for a D3.js visualization. The code imports the `select` function from D3 and uses it to target the existing `<svg>` element, preparing it for future data binding and drawing operations. The visualization shows no data or shapes, serving purely as a starter template. It relies on D3 v7, loaded via a CDN, with the rendering approach being SVG-based within the React framework.

This example uses an SVG container with fixed width and height, serving as a bare minimum HTML page that demonstrates CSS and JavaScript integration. The code defines an empty SVG element with dimensions of 960 by 500 pixels, and includes placeholder empty style and script tags. While the page currently renders a blank canvas, it provides a foundation for adding visualizations using JavaScript libraries like D3.js or React. The example highlights a minimalist approach to setting up an SVG-based rendering environment.
