Cars Scatter Plot

This scatter plot shows the relationship between horsepower and weight for cars, with each red circle representing a vehicle. The code loads the auto-mpg dataset via `d3.csv` and uses `d3.scaleLinear`, `d3.extent`, `d3.axisBottom`, `d3.axisLeft`, and `d3.select` from D3 v5 to render an SVG chart. Axis labels and a title are added as text elements, while circles are drawn with an opacity of 0.3. Data values are parsed to numbers before rendering.

Scatter Plot

This scatter plot displays the populations of the top 10 most populous countries in 2018, using a categorical vertical axis for country names and a linear horizontal axis for population counts. Each circle’s position encodes the country’s population value, with a uniform radius for all points. The visualization is built with D3 v5, using `scaleLinear` and `scalePoint` for axes, and `axisBottom` and `axisLeft` to render ticks and grid lines. Data is loaded from a local CSV file and rendered as SVG circles.

Customizing Axes

This example displays a bar chart of the top 10 most populous countries in 2018, with population values on the x-axis and country names on the y-axis. The chart uses D3 v5 APIs including `scaleLinear`, `scaleBand`, `axisBottom`, and `axisLeft` to position bars and customize tick marks, removing default domain lines and applying a custom tick formatter that converts values to billions. Grid lines extend across the plot area, and labels for the title and axes are added with SVG text elements.

Making a Bar Chart

This bar chart displays the populations of the top 10 most populous countries in 2018, using horizontal bars sorted by country name. The chart is rendered as an SVG using D3 v5, with `d3.scaleLinear` mapping population values to bar widths and `d3.scaleBand` positioning each country along the y-axis. Axes are generated with `d3.axisLeft` and `d3.axisBottom`, and data is loaded from a CSV file via `d3.csv`. Population values are multiplied by 1000 to reflect actual figures.

Fork of Responding to Resize

This example demonstrates a responsive SVG visualization that fills the entire browser window and redraws its content whenever the viewport size changes. It shows two thick, semi-transparent green lines forming an X across the full width and height of the chart container. The code uses D3 v5 to select the `#chart` div, append an SVG element, and bind line data to render the X. A `redraw` function reads the container’s `clientWidth` and `clientHeight` to update the SVG’s dimensions, then repositions the lines via the `merge` pattern. The `window.addEventListener("resize", redraw)` triggers this responsive behavior.

Let's make a face!

A cheerful cartoon face is drawn on a yellow circle with black-outlined eyes, animated eyebrows, and a mouth created using D3’s `arc` generator. The eyebrows transition vertically via `transition.attr` over two seconds, moving up and then returning. The SVG is centered using a `g` transform, and all shapes—circles, rectangles, and a path—are appended with D3 v5, with styling handled by an external CSS file.

Shapes with SVG and CSS

This example demonstrates the fundamental SVG shapes—circles and rectangles—styling through both inline attributes and CSS classes. It shows how presentation properties like fill, stroke, and stroke-width can be defined either directly or via a stylesheet. The code applies a scale transform to the entire group, then a translate with a grouped color and stroke style, and finally a path with a round stroke-linejoin. The `.lines` class in `styles.css` sets stroke appearance, while `index.html` uses standard SVG markup within an HTML document.

HTML Cars Report

This example shows a simple car price report, displaying three used vehicles with their model years and prices in a plain HTML list. One entry, the 2012 Nissan Leaf, is visually emphasized with red text. The page is built using a single `index.html` file that references an external `styles.css` stylesheet, which sets a large monospace font size and applies the red highlight class. No JavaScript or dynamic libraries are used; the visualization is purely static HTML and CSS.

Cars Report

This example demonstrates an asynchronous data-loading and text-reporting workflow. It fetches a hardcoded JSON array of car objects from `getCars.js` after a simulated two-second delay, then filters and formats the entries using `generateReport` and `formatCar` to display a list of cars priced under $2,000. The report is rendered into a `<pre>` element via the DOM API, with a loading message shown initially. The code showcases local ES6 module imports, promise handling, and dynamic text updates without any external libraries.
