ICE-8: Network Tree

A network tree rendered as a force-directed graph shows six named nodes and five weighted links, with each node placed using a physics simulation. The visualization loads data from a local JSON file and uses two D3 versions: `d3.layout.force` from d3.v2 for the force simulation, and d3.v4 for DOM selection and SVG creation. Nodes appear as gray circles with labels, while link thickness encodes the weight value from the data. The SVG output updates positions on each tick of the force layout, producing an organic tree-like structure centered on the root node.

ICE-8: Family Tree

This visualization presents a family tree as a dendrogram, using circles sized by a numeric value and colored by a categorical level to represent individuals. The SVG rendering uses D3 v6's hierarchy and tree layout APIs to position nodes and draw curved links between parents and children. Node colors and link strokes are mapped directly from the data's "level" and "type" properties, with text labels positioned relative to leaf or internal node status.

ICE-8: Country Map

This example renders a country map using D3.js v4 with a Mercator projection, centering and scaling to zoom in on England. It loads GeoJSON data asynchronously via `d3.json`, filters the features to include only England, and draws the result as SVG paths using `d3.geoPath`. The map is filled with a single grey color and no stroke, displaying the country’s outline on a blank canvas.

ICE 8: World Map With TopoJson

This example renders a world map using the D3.js library, displaying countries as green shapes on a blue sphere. It loads TopoJSON data from a GitHub gist and converts it to GeoJSON using the `feature` method from the topojson library. The map uses `d3.geoNaturalEarth1` for the projection and `d3.geoPath` to generate SVG paths for each country and the surrounding sphere, with styling applied via CSS classes.

ICE-7: Reusable Scatter Plot

This visualization shows a scatter plot of the classic Iris dataset, mapping petal width along the x-axis and sepal length along the y-axis. Each data point is rendered as a distinct SVG symbol (circle, square, or triangle) representing one of the three iris species. The implementation builds a reusable `scatterPlot` module that accepts configurable accessor functions for data values and symbols, using D3’s `scaleLinear`, `scaleOrdinal`, `axisLeft`, `axisBottom`, and `symbol` APIs. It loads the CSV data via `d3.csv` and populates an SVG canvas sized to the full browser window.

ICE-7: Pie Chart with labels

This example shows the population distribution across age groups as a pie chart. The visualization displays a colored slice for each age group, with labels placed inside the slices and a legend on the right detailing each group's name and population. The chart is rendered as an SVG using D3.js v3, loading data from a CSV file via `d3.csv`. The code defines arc geometry with `d3.svg.arc` and `d3.layout.pie`, applies a categorical color scale via `d3.scale.category20`, and positions labels using the centroid calculation `arc.centroid(d)`.

ICE-7: Line Chart

This line chart displays CO2 emissions over the years, using a smooth curve to connect data points from a CSV dataset. The visualization uses D3 v5's `scaleLinear`, `axisBottom`, `axisLeft`, and `line` with `curveBasis` to render the chart as an SVG. A maroon line path and styled axis labels with gridlines are included. The code loads data via `csv` from a gist, formats numeric fields, and appends axes, labels, and a title within a group element.

ICE-7: Area Chart

This area chart visualizes CO2 emissions over time, with the x-axis representing total emissions and the y-axis showing the year. The chart uses an area generator with a basis curve to create a smooth, filled path in maroon. Built with D3 v5 within a React framework, it employs `scaleLinear`, `scaleTime`, `axisLeft`, and `axisBottom` for scales and axes, and renders as an SVG. Data is loaded from a CSV file using D3’s `csv` method.

ICE-6: Creating a Scatter Plot with D3.js

This example visualizes the Iris dataset as a scatter plot, mapping petal length and petal width to x and y positions, with circles colored by species (setosa, versicolor, and virginica). The D3.js code loads CSV data with `d3.csv`, parses numeric fields, and uses `scaleLinear` and `extent` to set scales. Axes are rendered with `axisLeft` and `axisBottom`, while `selectAll` and `join` bind data to SVG circles. The visualization fills the viewport and uses a fixed radius for all points.

ICE-6: Rendering Marks and Channels with React & D3

This example visualizes the horsepower of ten cars from a CSV dataset as horizontal bars, using React components to render SVG marks and channels. The code employs `d3.csv` for data loading, `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` for positioning, and manual axis construction with `xScale.ticks()`. React’s `useState` and `useEffect` manage asynchronous data fetching, while SVG `<rect>` elements encode values through width. D3’s `max` and `format` utilities support scaling, with axes drawn as custom React elements rather than D3 axis generators.

ICE - 5 : Loading and Parsing Data with D3.js

This example demonstrates how to load and parse a CSV dataset using D3.js v7, displaying the file size, row count, and column count in a large text element. The visualization includes two inline SVGs: a decorative illustration and a chart-like graphic with rectangles, lines, and drop shadows. The code uses `d3.csv()` to fetch data from a GitHub Gist URL and `d3.csvFormat()` to compute the raw data size in kilobytes. The page relies on React for structure and standard CSS for styling.

Face with Rolling eyes

A yellow circle face with rolling eyes and a neutral, rectangular smile. The eyes are drawn as white circles containing black corneas positioned upward and inward, creating the rolling-eye effect. The visualization uses D3.js version 7 to append SVG elements, including circles for the face and eyes and a rectangle for the mouth, with hardcoded dimensions based on the SVG's height and width.
