Choropleth Map

This choropleth map colors world countries by their economy category using an ordinal color scale with a spectral scheme, and displays a color legend with clickable circles. It renders geographic boundaries with antialiased SVG paths via `d3.geoPath` and the Natural Earth projection, while loading data from the world-atlas package (TSV metadata and TopoJSON geometries) and processing it with `topojson.feature`. Hovering highlights a country in red, and the map supports zooming through the `d3.zoom` interaction.

Let's make a world map with D3.js!

This example displays a world map rendered as an SVG, with countries filled in green and oceans represented by a turquoise sphere background. It uses D3 v5’s `d3.geoNaturalEarth1` projection and `d3.geoPath` to generate the geographic paths from TopoJSON data loaded from the world-atlas package. The code converts TopoJSON features into GeoJSON using topojson’s `feature` method, then binds and appends country paths to the SVG. A linked video tutorial accompanies the visualization.

Untitled

This example shows a world map rendered as light green countries against a blue sphere, with black country borders at low opacity. It uses D3’s `geoNaturalEarth1` projection and `geoPath` to draw geographic shapes, while `topojson.feature` extracts country polygons from the world-atlas dataset (110m resolution). The SVG is populated asynchronously after fetching the TopoJSON file, and the sphere is drawn first as a filled path. Styling comes entirely from CSS classes.

Let's make a face with D3.js!

This example uses D3.js to build a simple smiley face out of SVG shapes, with animated eyebrows that move up and down. It demonstrates fundamental DOM manipulation through method chaining: appending circles and rectangles to construct the face, and using `transition().duration()` to move the eyebrow group. The code imports `select` and `arc` from D3 v5, and draws the mouth with the `arc()` path generator. A yellow circle with a black stroke forms the head, with eyes and eyebrows positioned via SVG transforms.

Let's make a map with D3.js!

This example shows a world map rendered as SVG, with countries filled in light green against a blue sphere, using a natural Earth projection to display the globe. The code loads GeoJSON country boundaries from the world-atlas TopoJSON dataset and converts them using the `feature` function from topojson. D3’s `geoPath` and `geoNaturalEarth1` projection generate the geographic paths, while a separate path outlines the spherical backdrop. The visualization is minimal, focusing on a clean, interactive-free display of global landmasses.
