Fork of Loading Data with React & D3

This example demonstrates the use of React state to manage asynchronous data loading in a D3 visualization. It fetches a CSV file containing CSS named colors from a GitHub gist and displays a summary of the data, including its size in kilobytes, row count, and column count. The code uses React's `useState` and `useEffect` hooks to trigger the load and store the result, while D3's `csv` utility parses the remote data. The rendered output is plain text within a `<pre>` element, constructed by the `message` function, which also employs `d3.csvFormat` to calculate the data's byte size.

Fork of Fork of Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates the process of loading and parsing CSV data by displaying the file size, row count, and column count of a CSS Named Colors dataset. Using d3.csv to fetch and parse the remote CSV file, the code then formats the summary statistics with d3.csvFormat and updates the page. The visualization also includes commented-out alternatives using the Fetch API with async/await and d3.csvParse, as well as a "pyramid of doom" pattern, to illustrate different approaches to asynchronous data loading.

Fork of Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates the size and structure of a CSV file containing CSS named colors using text-based output. The visual shows three metrics: the file size in kilobytes, the number of data rows, and the number of columns. The primary implementation employs `d3.csv()` from D3 v5, which loads and parses the remote CSV data asynchronously, with the results displayed in a large HTML `<pre>` element. The code also includes commented alternatives using the Fetch API with async/await and `d3.csvParse()` for comparison.

Mouse Follower

A single yellow circle follows the mouse cursor across a blank SVG canvas. The React component tracks pointer coordinates through an `onMouseMove` event handler, using the `useState` hook to update the circle’s `cx` and `cy` attributes with each movement. The example demonstrates state-driven, declarative SVG rendering in React, with the circle initialized at the center of the 960×500 viewport and a fixed radius of 30 pixels.

Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates how to fetch and inspect raw CSV data in a web browser. It uses the built-in `fetch` API with asynchronous `async`/`await` syntax to retrieve a text file containing CSS named colors from a GitHub Gist. The code defines a `fetchText` helper that converts the network response to text, then logs that text to the browser console. The visualization is limited to console output, showing the parsing pipeline without any graphical rendering. It relies on JavaScript’s native `Promise` handling and the `fetch` function, with no external libraries.

Fork of Smiley Face Part Iv

A grid of eighteen smiley faces is rendered, each with randomized eye radii while sharing identical positioning, stroke, and mouth parameters. The example demonstrates component composition in React, where `Face`, `BackgroundCircle`, `Eyes`, `Mouth`, and `FaceContainer` are assembled as reusable JSX components. D3’s `arc` generator creates the mouth path, while ReactDOM renders the SVG elements. Data originates from a `range(18)` array, and each face is generated with a `Math.random()` call for the eye size, producing subtle visual variation across the uniform grid.

Fork of Smiley Face Part III

This example shows a smiley face composed of a yellow circular head, two eyes, and an arc-shaped mouth, all rendered as SVG elements. The React component `App` defines the face using D3’s `arc()` generator to create the mouth path, while positioning each shape with explicit coordinates and offsets. It uses React 16.9 for component rendering, D3 v5 for the arc calculation, and ReactDOM to mount the SVG into the page, with styling that hides the body margin and overflow.

Assignment: Tweak the Face

This example shows a stylized smiley face built with React and D3, featuring yellow circular head, two eyes, and a curved mouth. The face is centered within an SVG canvas, with the head drawn as a yellow circle with a black stroke. The mouth is generated using D3’s `arc` generator with specified inner/outer radii and start/end angles, producing a semicircular shape. React renders the SVG elements declaratively, while D3 v7 provides the arc path calculation for the mouth.

Smiley Face Part 1

A yellow smiley face is drawn as a large circle with two smaller eye circles and a semi-circular mouth path, all rendered in SVG. The face is positioned at the center of a 960 by 500 canvas, with the head filled in yellow and outlined with a black stroke. Built with React and D3, the visualization uses D3’s `arc` API to generate the mouth’s path geometry, while React handles the SVG element composition.
