Loading Data with React & D3

This example demonstrates how to load and summarize a CSV dataset using D3 utilities within a React application. It shows a text-based overview of the data, displaying the file size in kilobytes, row count, and column count, initially showing a "Loading..." message. The code fetches a CSS named colors CSV from a GitHub gist using `d3.csv`, stores the result in React state via `useState` and `useEffect`, and formats the statistics with `d3.csvFormat`. The output is rendered as SVG text inside a `<pre>` element using ReactDOM.

Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates how to load and parse CSV data using D3 v7, showing the file size, row count, and column count of a remote dataset containing CSS named colors. The page fetches a CSV file from a GitHub gist via the `d3.csv` method, which returns a promise that resolves to an array of parsed objects. The code then uses `d3.csvFormat` and the array’s `length` and `columns` properties to generate a summary message displayed in a large `<pre>` element. Alternative commented-out approaches using `fetch`, `async/await`, and `d3.csvParse` are also included.

Mouse Follower

A single gray circle tracks the mouse’s exact position across an SVG canvas, updating its center coordinates in real time as the pointer moves. Built with React’s `useState` and `useCallback` hooks, the circle’s `cx` and `cy` attributes are re-rendered on every `mousemove` event, using the `clientX` and `clientY` values from the event object. D3 is loaded but only for its `arc` import, which remains unused in the visible code. The SVG viewport is fixed at 960 by 500 pixels.

Smiley Face

A grid of randomly generated smiley faces is rendered, each with a yellow circular background, black eyes, and a curved mouth formed by a D3 arc. Built with React and D3 version 7, the example creates multiple face instances using the `range` function and maps them to `Face` components, translating each into an SVG group. D3’s `arc()` API defines the mouth path, while `Math.random()` varies stroke width, eye size, and mouth dimensions across faces.

Tweak Face

A simple SVG face built with React and D3 v7 displays a rounded red rectangle as a head, two black circles for eyes, a vertical line for a nose, and an arc-shaped mouth generated with `d3.arc()`. The face is centered within a 960x500 viewport using fixed pixel coordinates and transforms, with all shapes given 0.5 opacity and outlined in black. The code defines geometric constants for dimensions and positions, then renders each element as a JSX component inside a single `<g>` group. No interactive behavior or data binding is present; the visualization is purely static.
