Bar Chart v1

This example displays the top 10 most populous countries as horizontal bars with no axes or labels, making it a "pathetic" chart by design. The visualization uses React to fetch data from a CSV file of United Nations World Population Prospects 2019 and renders SVG rectangles via d3.scaleBand and d3.scaleLinear. The bar lengths encode population values for 2020, and the chart lacks any visual guides, focusing purely on raw bar lengths. The code employs d3.csv for data loading and React's useEffect and useState for state management.

Fork of Rendering data with react d3 arc

This example renders the CSS named colors as a full circular pie chart using React and D3 (v7). It loads color names and hex values from a CSV via `d3.csv`, then draws each slice as an SVG path generated with `d3.arc`, mapping each color name to an equal angular segment. The chart uses a simple `d3.pie` layout with a value of 1, and React manages the state for asynchronous data loading, displaying “Loading” until the CSV arrives.

Rendering data with react

This example renders a striped color chart from the CSS Named Colors dataset, which is loaded via D3’s `csv` utility. Each row of the dataset becomes a 960-pixel-wide, 4-pixel-tall `div`, colored by the row’s `RGB hex value` and stacked vertically. Built with React 16.9 and D3 v7, the page uses React’s `useState` and `useEffect` hooks to fetch and store the data, displaying a brief “Loading…” message until it arrives. The resulting visualization shows all named colors as a continuous horizontal spectrum.

Vega-Lite API Template

This visualization displays automobile data from a CSV file, plotting horsepower against origin with points colored by year and labeled by name. It demonstrates the vega-lite-api library, which programmatically constructs Vega-Lite specifications using JavaScript method chaining. The code registers Vega, Vega-Lite, and the API with vega-tooltip, then renders an interactive SVG chart that adapts to the window size. Custom axis and label styles in config.js improve readability against a dark theme.

Loading and Parsing CSV Data

This example demonstrates how to load and parse CSV data from a remote URL using D3.js version 7. It fetches a dataset of CSS named colors and displays three summary statistics: the file size in kilobytes, the number of rows, and the number of columns. The code uses `d3.csv` to asynchronously load and parse the data, then `d3.csvFormat` to measure its size, and updates the text content of an HTML `<pre>` element. Alternative commented-out approaches show the use of `fetch` with `async`/`await` and `d3.csvParse`.

Mouse follower

A React component uses SVG to draw a circle that follows the mouse cursor across the full browser window. The circle’s position is tracked via the `onMouseMove` event handler, which updates React state with the cursor’s `clientX` and `clientY` coordinates. The SVG viewport matches the window’s inner width and height, and the circle is re-rendered with a fixed radius at the updated position. The example demonstrates declarative UI updates driven by user input, using React’s `useState` and `useCallback` hooks.

Smiley Face Part I

A grid of sixteen smiley faces, each with a yellow circular head, black outlined eyes, and an open mouth, demonstrates reusable React components for SVG visualization. The display shows how randomized parameters produce variation in eye offset, eye radius, mouth width, and mouth radius across the faces. Built with React and D3 v7, the code uses the D3 arc generator to create each mouth path, while FaceContainer, BackgroundCircle, Eyes, and Mouth components compose the SVG structure with a single shared transform for centering. Each face is rendered independently with deterministic randomness applied per component.
