search and read

This example demonstrates a file-searching utility that locates every `target.txt` file within a directory tree and prints its contents to the console. The code uses the `os.walk` API to traverse directories recursively, collecting paths where the target file exists, then opens and reads each matching file with Python’s built-in `open` function. The rendering approach is purely text-based, with output delivered as sequential lines from each located file. No external visualization libraries are employed; instead, the focus is on demonstrating filesystem traversal and conditional file matching through standard library functions.

Tmux

This example shows a Tmux terminal multiplexer configuration that customizes the status bar and interface colors. The code sets a default terminal type, enables true-color support, and updates the status bar every second. It styles the left side with the session name, window index, and pane number, and the right side with the hostname and a 24-hour clock. The status bar uses ANSI color names and format specifiers like `#S`, `#I`, and `#P`, with no external libraries or data sources—it is a plain-text configuration file.

subdirectory files

This example demonstrates how to recursively traverse a directory structure using Python’s `os.walk` API to collect all file paths into a set, then prints the count and the set of relative paths. The visualization shows the logical hierarchy of files and folders, with the code relying on `os.path.relpath` to generate clean, relative file locations from the root directory. The rendering approach is text-based output rather than a graphical chart, emphasizing the data collection and enumeration process. The script’s behavior is limited to listing files, with no sorting, filtering, or graphical mapping applied.

covid_data

This visualization shows the cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases over time for Afghanistan and Albania from January to August 2020, with each country tracked as a separate line across the date columns. The line chart uses a linear scale for case counts, with the x-axis representing chronological dates from 1/22/20 through 8/21/20, and the y-axis indicating cumulative case numbers. The data originates from a gist by Cameron-Grams, providing country-level time series. The example highlights the exponential growth patterns and eventual plateauing of cases in these two countries during the early pandemic period, demonstrating how the dataset can be used to compare outbreak trajectories across different regions.

Seattle Library Door Counts 2010 to 2019

This visualization tracks monthly visitor counts for 27 Seattle Public Library branches from 2010 through 2019, revealing seasonal patterns and branch-level differences in a small-multiple line chart. The data, sourced from a gist by Cameron-Grams, plots each branch’s total visits over time, with the central library (CEN) dominating the counts and smaller branches showing lower, flatter trends.

Construction Permit information from 1990 to 2019

This visualization tracks construction permit activity in Washtenaw County from 1990 to 2019, showing annual counts and values across building types—single-unit, double-unit, three/four-unit, and five-plus-unit structures. A multi-line chart displays yearly trends, with distinct colored lines for each category. The rendering uses the D3.js library, specifically `d3.line` and `d3.scaleLinear` for axes, while tooltips employ `d3.pointer` for interactivity. Data comes from the provided CSV file, parsed with `d3.csvParse`. The chart highlights peaks in single-unit construction during the early 2000s and a sharp decline after 2006, reflecting economic cycles.

Starter tmux conf from....the web.

This example visualizes the configuration structure of a tmux status bar, showing how session, window, and pane information is formatted and color-coded. The code uses tmux’s `set -g` commands to define left and right status sections, including session name, window index, pane number, hostname, and a live clock with date. It explicitly sets colors for backgrounds, foregrounds, and active/inactive states, and includes workarounds for tmux’s color-flicker bug in activity indicators. The rendering approach is a direct textual representation of the terminal multiplexer’s built-in UI, with no external libraries beyond tmux’s native configuration syntax.

Working drives

This visualization maps the process of mounting and managing external drives on a Linux system, using a flowchart-style layout. It shows the sequence from identifying a drive (via `lsblk` or `sudo fdisk -l`) through creating a mount point, mounting the partition, and updating `/etc/fstab` for persistence, ending with optional symbolic links in `Documents`. The code uses D3.js (`d3.forceSimulation` or similar layout) to arrange nodes and links, with text labels for each terminal command and file path. Data comes from the author’s collected notes and cited tutorials, rendered as a directed graph where each step branches into sub-actions like `sudo chown` for permissions.

compile commands to register master clipboard

This example shows the terminal commands and configuration steps needed to enable system clipboard access in Vim, specifically for copying text to the master clipboard. It begins by installing `vim-gtk` and `xorg-dev` via `sudo apt-get`, then compiles Vim from source using `./configure --with-x --enable-gui=auto --with-features=huge` and `make` to ensure clipboard support. The description uses the `set clipboard=unnamedplus` command in `.vimrc` to link Vim’s default register with the system’s `+` register, making yanked text available to other applications. The code references package managers and build tools like `apt-get` and `make`, but no external JavaScript libraries or APIs are present.

number exercises

This example visualizes the outcomes of several JavaScript exercise functions, each testing a specific computation. It shows whether functions like `computeArea`, temperature converters `celsToFahr` and `fahrToCels`, and `isDivisible` produce expected results. The code relies on native JavaScript functions and console logging to report pass or fail statuses, with no external libraries or data sources. The rendering approach is purely textual, using `console.log` output to display success or failure messages for each test case, making the results immediately visible in the console.

Minimal character-level language model with a Vanilla Recurrent Neural Network, in Python/numpy

This example shows a minimal character-level language model built with a vanilla recurrent neural network, trained on a plain text file to learn and generate sequences of characters. The visualization highlights the network’s hidden state dynamics and sampling process as it predicts subsequent characters. Implemented in Python using NumPy, the code defines a single-layer RNN with a tanh activation, applies backpropagation through time for gradient computation, and uses Adagrad for parameter updates. The training loop periodically samples from the model to display generated text, with loss values and sampled outputs printed for monitoring.
