In the 2008 crisis financial assets suddenly lost a large part of their nominal value. The subprime mortgage crisis and the bursting of other real estate bubbles around the world led to recession in the US and later now in Europe.
Around the country banks were closed. Banks with the largest asset values closed in Georgia, Florida and Illinois.
The majority of banks closed around 2010 and is followed by 140 banks which closed in 2009. In 2009 most of the banks with highest asset valuations closed (valuation larger than $1,000,000,000). If you search for the banks with the smallest asset values, the year the most banks failed was in 2010 (asset value smaller than $94,000,000).
