This visualization displays small multiples of pie charts showing the religious breakdown of the five most populous countries. Each donut uses color-coded slices for different religions, with all charts scaled equally regardless of population, highlighting proportional composition within each nation. The code uses D3.js with `d3.layout.pie` and `d3.svg.arc` for chart generation, `d3.nest` for data grouping, and the d3-legend library for the color key. Data comes from the Pew Research Center Global Religious Landscape dataset.

AI-generated description

A small multiples visualization of pie charts showing the breakdown of religions for the largest 5 countries. This is example 32 from the screencast Splitting Charts.

Note that area is not proportional to population, because the donuts are all the same size, regardless of population. This visualization shows the proportions of different religions within each country only. This property makes this visualization misleading in a way. For example, Brazil gets just as many pixels as China while being only a fraction of the population. To remedy this, it would be better to size each pie chart based on the population of each country.

Data from Pew Research Center Global Religious Landscape data set
Uses d3-legend
Uses nested selections.

D3 Example

This is a small-multiples visualization of pie charts showing the religious breakdown of the five most populous countries. Each country’s donut chart displays the proportion of its population following each religion, but the charts are all the same size, so area is not proportional to population, which can be misleading. The code uses D3’s `d3.layout.pie` and `d3.svg.arc` to generate the slices, with nested selections binding data to each chart. It also employs the d3-legend library for the color legend and renders as SVG. Data comes from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset.

D3 Example

This small multiples visualization uses donut charts to show the religious breakdown of the five most populous countries. Each donut represents a country, with slices sized by the proportion of followers of each religion within that country, though the donuts themselves are equal-sized regardless of population. The code uses D3.js (v3) with `d3.layout.pie`, `d3.svg.arc`, and `d3.nest` for data grouping, plus the d3-legend library for the color legend. Data comes from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset, rendered as SVG.

D3 Example

This visualization displays small multiples of donut charts, one per country, showing the religious breakdown of the five most populous nations. Each donut uses the same fixed radius, so the charts show only the proportion of religions within each country, not the total population, making the visual misleading for cross-country comparison. The code uses D3’s `d3.layout.pie` and `d3.svg.arc` to generate the slices, with nested selections via `d3.nest()` to group data by country. A color legend from `d3-legend` maps religions to colors, and the data comes from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset, loaded from a CSV file.

D3 Example

This example shows small multiples pie charts comparing the religious breakdown of the world’s five most populous countries, with each pie’s area scaled proportionally to that country’s total population. The visualization uses D3’s nested selections and d3.layout.pie with d3.svg.arc to draw the charts, d3.scale.sqrt for the population-based radius, and d3.legend.color for the categorical color key. Data comes from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset, loaded from a CSV file.

D3 Example

Small multiples of donut charts display the religious composition of the five most populous countries. Each donut’s area is proportional to that country’s total population, making the visualization more honest than a fixed-size comparison. The code uses `d3.nest()` to group data by country, `d3.layout.pie()` and `d3.svg.arc()` to construct the arcs, and a square-root `radiusScale` tied to population sums. Data comes from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset. A categorical `colorScale` and a `d3.legend.color()` legend encode the religions, with an `xAxis` labeling each country.

D3 Example

This small multiples visualization displays the religious composition of the five most populous countries—China, India, the USA, Indonesia, and Brazil—using donut charts. Each donut represents one country, with slices sized by the population of each religion, though the charts themselves are not scaled by total population. The code uses D3’s `d3.layout.pie` and `d3.svg.arc` to generate the slices, with a nested selection binding data per country. A color legend from the d3-legend library maps religions to a category10 scale, while the x-axis labels each country. The data comes from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset, rendered as SVG.

D3 Example

This example visualizes the breakdown of religious affiliations across the five most populous countries using a small multiples layout of polar area charts, where each country appears as a separate circular chart and each segment’s radius encodes the population of a given religion. The visualization is rendered with SVG, using D3’s nested selections to group data by country and a pie layout to generate slices. The code explicitly uses `d3.layout.pie`, `d3.svg.arc`, `d3.nest`, and ordinal and sqrt scales, while the color legend is built with the d3-legend library. Data comes from the Pew Research Center Global Religious Landscape dataset, loaded from a CSV file.

D3 Example

A small multiples visualization of polar area charts displays the breakdown of religious populations across countries, with each pie chart positioned around a central circle and sized by population. The view animates country charts into place and supports clicking the color legend to re-rank countries by the selected religion’s population. Built with D3.js and SVG, the code uses nested selections, `d3.layout.pie`, `d3.svg.arc`, and ordinal, sqrt, and category color scales, with data from the Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape dataset.
