A small multiples grid of 21,000 rectangles visualizes the distribution of employees at Posti, Finland’s postal service. The SVG rendering, built with D3.js version 3.5.5, encodes each individual as a 3×3 pixel cell, using black for the first 861 workers and orange for the remainder. The layout is computed with simple modulo arithmetic, placing 200 cells per row, producing a dense, abstract population map that highlights the proportional scale of the workforce.

Yliopiston työntekijät

This visualization presents the distribution of employees at a university, where each small rectangle represents a single individual. The 8,162 total employees are arranged in a dense grid, with the first 981 employees colored black and the remainder rendered in blue, visually differentiating a specific subset from the rest of the population. The piece uses D3.js (version 3.5.5) to programmatically generate SVG rectangles within a fixed 1200x1200 canvas, placing each element based on its index to form a uniform grid pattern. The data is sourced from a gist authored by Sokrates86, with the rendering handled entirely through SVG.

Lottokone1

A grid of 39 colored rectangles displays lottery draw frequencies, with colors mapped from red to darker shades based on value. The layout positions six columns per row, expanding vertically across seven rows. Built with D3.js version 3.5.5, ordinal and linear scales (`d3.scale.ordinal`, `d3.scale.linear`) compute x and y positions, while a third linear scale maps minimum to maximum values to RGB red intensity. SVG renders the static visualization, using hardcoded data and blockbuilder.org as the source.

D3 Scatter Plot

A D3 scatter plot displays five Finnish municipalities, plotting their mobile scores against desktop scores on linear scales. Each circle’s fill color derives from a threshold scale, categorizing the average of the two scores into red, orange, or green ranges. The SVG rendering includes axes for both metrics, and hover interactions trigger tooltips showing the municipality name via mouseover, mousemove, and mouseout events. The code uses d3.scaleLinear, d3.scaleThreshold, d3.axisBottom, d3.axisLeft, and d3.select for DOM manipulation.

Pseudo viz for symbol filled in blocks

This visualization uses filled SVG symbols to represent employment data across three categories. Red rectangles mark unemployment, blue marks non-agriculture employment, and green marks agriculture, with each symbol standing for 5,000 people. The code employs d3.symbol with d3.symbolsFill to generate the symbols, d3.range for population distribution, and d3.select with .join to create the rectangles and symbols. The layout uses window.innerWidth and innerHeight to size the SVG dynamically.

Post Office Scatter Plot

This scatter plot displays the latitude and longitude of thousands of US post offices, with each semi-transparent circle representing a single location. Built with D3 v6 and SVG, it maps the dataset’s geographic coordinates onto linear scales using `d3.scaleLinear` and `d3.extent`, rendering circles with a radius of two pixels. The axes are generated with `d3.axisLeft` and `d3.axisBottom`, while the data is loaded asynchronously from a CSV file hosted in a GitHub gist. The visualization reveals the density of post offices across the continental United States, with clusters forming along the East and West coasts.

Some D3

Ten square blocks of equal size render for the top ten countries by population, using a fixed 300-by-300 pixel rectangle per data row. The visualization loads population figures from a CSV file and multiplies each value by 1000 to convert from thousands. Using D3 v7’s `select`, `csv`, and data-join method, the code appends SVG `rect` elements to a static 960-by-500 canvas, but does not position them or encode population differences.

Dataviz 2018 Assignment Graphics

A grid of small blue rectangles is generated and drawn into an SVG canvas. The page loads an HTML document that defines a 5000 by 3000 pixel SVG element and uses a JavaScript loop to create each rectangle, setting its position, size, and fill color programmatically via the SVG namespace. The rectangles are arranged in rows and columns, creating a simple, repeating pattern. The visualization relies entirely on the SVG `rect` element and JavaScript DOM manipulation, with no external charting library, and includes a CSS stylesheet for general page styling.

Dataviz 2018 Assignment Graphics

A grid of small blue rectangles is arranged in seven rows and three columns inside a grey rectangular frame, with one rectangle overwritten in the third row. The layout is generated programmatically using nested JavaScript loops that create SVG `rect` elements via `document.createElementNS` and append them to an SVG element with the `xmlns` namespace. Pure SVG and CSS render the shapes, with no external visualization library.
