This animation shows all known trans-neptunian objects in the outer solar system as orbiting points on a black canvas, with a glowing Sun at the center. Pluto’s orbit is included among the many icy bodies, making the case that it isn’t particularly special. Built with D3.js and canvas, the visualization uses real orbital data from JPL Solar System Dynamics and renders each object’s trajectory as an ellipse. The view animates continuously, and scrolling zooms in and out to explore scale. A soft trail effect and muted blue-to-red color scale tied to orbital eccentricity give the swarm depth, while the caption reminds us why Pluto was reclassified in 2006. The project is part of the author’s master’s thesis in information design.

AI-generated description

This block shows the orbits of all known planets and trans-neptunian objects in the solar system. Since 2006, Pluto is no longer being called a planet. This visualization tries to show you why. Made with d3.js in the spring of 2016. I made this while learning JavaScript, D3.js and astronomy.

Data by JPL Solar System Dynamics

This visualization is a part of my master's thesis in Information Design, see antonlecock.be/astronomy for many more examples.
