A histogram built with `d3.nest` displays the distribution of word lengths across a passage of text, animated as bars grow and reorder. The visualization uses D3 v4’s `nest()` to bin words by character count, then renders each bin as a vertical bar via SVG. A smooth animation transitions between histogram states as the underlying text updates, with bars scaling and sliding to reflect new counts. The dark background and monospaced font emphasize the data, while the source text scrolls alongside to show its influence on the chart.

Gist 6568151

A histogram displays a randomly generated Irwin–Hall distribution of 50 values, showing the count of scores binned into twenty uniform intervals. The chart uses D3’s histogram layout and linear scales to position bars, with axis ticks placed between bars to clarify bin boundaries. Bar counts are labeled above each rectangle, and mouseover events log the original data objects and associated names filtered from the source array. Rendered as SVG using d3.v2, the example demonstrates binning and interactive data binding.

nests1

This visualization presents a filterable bar chart of data on individuals under custody, using a nested hierarchy to organize records by status and priority. The interactive page, built with React and rendered as SVG, loads JSON data from a GitHub Gist and processes it through the `d3.nest()` API to create the structured dataset. The code imports `nest`, `select`, and `remove` from D3 v5, with data cleaning and transformation handled by custom functions in `prepareData.js`, while the `d3.json` method fetches the remote source.

Histogram

This histogram visualizes the distribution of a numeric variable, grouping observed values into discrete bins and displaying their frequencies as vertical bars. It uses the D3.js library, specifically leveraging `d3.histogram` and `d3.scale` APIs to compute bin ranges and map data to screen coordinates. The rendering relies on SVG paths generated from the binned counts, with axes and labels drawn via D3’s measurement and tick utilities. The dataset originates from a GitHub gist, and the code operates entirely in the browser without external data files.

Histogram

This histogram visualizes the distribution of a dataset using interactive bars, rendered with React and D3. It shows the frequency of data points across numeric bins, with hover effects highlighting individual bars. The code uses `d3.histogram` to compute bin ranges and `d3.scaleLinear` for positioning, while SVG paths are generated via `d3.area` for the bar shapes. The chart dynamically updates based on user-selected bin counts, demonstrating a reusable React component pattern. The underlying data is random-generated, and the styling relies on plain CSS defined in the linked stylesheet.

rollup-nestby

The visualization demonstrates nested data aggregation by grouping and rolling up values across multiple categorical levels. It uses `d3.nest()` with `.key()` and `.rollup()` functions to transform raw data into a hierarchical structure, which is then rendered as a treemap layout. The color scale applies sequential chromatic interpolation from `d3-scale-chromatic` to encode aggregated values. A custom D3 build bundles modules including `d3-jetpack` utilities, with the visualization rendered as a static treemap using `d3.hierarchy()` and `d3.treemap()`. The example shows how nested hierarchies can be computed and displayed through layered grouping operations.

Histogram

This interactive histogram visualizes the distribution of one numeric variable using data loaded from a CSV file. Built with D3 v7, it renders bars as SVG rectangles, with the x-axis scaled linearly and the y-axis representing bin counts. The chart updates responsively on window resize, recalculating the histogram with 40 thresholds to accommodate the new width. Data is fetched from the `data_to_viz` GitHub repository.

Histo-packing with d3-beeswarm

A rework of John Burn-Murdoch’s Histo-packing block, this visualization shows 5,000 numeric values from a JSON file arranged as a vertical histogram—a beeswarm of individual circles stacked and packed from the center outward. Each circle’s final vertical position reflects its value, while its color encodes the distance from 50, creating a gradient from orange to red. The d3-beeswarm plugin computes the collision-free arrangement, and d3 transitions animate circles from a starting line down to their packed destinations with staggered delays and durations. The chart uses d3 scales, axes, and SVG rendering.

histogram

An interactive histogram displays aggregate survey data grouped by student subject preference, with bars representing selectable metrics like average height, stress, or expense. Using D3 v5, a dropdown menu generated from the data fields triggers a selection change, updating the y-axis scale and re-rendering bar positions and heights via attribute updates. The visualization uses `d3.nest()` and `d3.rollup` to compute averages and sums from the JSON source, with axes created using `d3.axisBottom` and `d3.axisLeft`.
