shader gear

A real-time shader playground renders a series of WebGL fragment shaders as animated, full-screen visuals. The examples include smoothstep line plotting, mouse-interactive RGB gradients, distance-field circles, rotating polygon shapes with animated sides, and color-mixing loops—all driven by the uniform u_time. Shown side by side, they demonstrate how different GLSL functions shape geometry, color, and motion.

Twenty thousand colored circles fall from the top of the viewport, then settle into horizontal bands based on each circle's speed and size. Two quantized scales map circle index to a target row, and a WebGL shader renders each point with a soft-edged stroke and rounded fill. The animation cycles continuously via a REGL frame loop, with position and color computed per frame in the vertex and fragment shaders using D3 scales and lodash for data shuffling.

Fork of Mathematical Graphic Patterns

This animated canvas piece generates a shifting grid of glowing colored circles that ripple outward in a spiral formation, creating a dynamic, screensaver-like visual effect. The pattern continuously redraws over a semi-transparent black background, leaving faint trails as the positions and radii of the circles evolve over time. Rendering uses the Canvas 2D API with `getContext('2d')` and `requestAnimationFrame` for smooth animation. Each circle’s color, size, and location are computed from sine and cosine functions of grid coordinates and a steadily incrementing time variable, producing a complex, mathematically driven display.

A grid of small circles and hexagon-like arrangements of rounded orange rectangles animates in a staggered transition. The visualization generates a field of triangular tile motifs, where each tile contains three small circles and three rounded rectangles positioned at their edges. Initially, the rectangles and circles sit at the tile centers; after a delay, they rotate outward to the triangle’s midpoints. Using D3.js with SVG transitions, the code applies `translate` and `rotate` transforms to reposition elements, driven by trigonometric calculations for hexagon geometry. The rendering uses D3 selections and transitions, with data-bound groups and nested arrays to handle multiple coordinates.

This example presents a full-screen, animated canvas of randomly colored square pixels that continuously redraws itself. It shows how a simple generative pattern can create a dynamic, shifting mosaic across the entire browser window. The code uses the Canvas 2D API with `fillRect` and `requestAnimationFrame` to refresh the display, while each frame assigns new random RGB values to every pixel block. The visualization responds to window resizing by updating the canvas dimensions, and it is rendered inside a draggable, resizable widget container.

This animated SVG visualization, rendered with D3.js, explores how geometric forms can be generated through code. The page loads a script called `circle-lattice.js` that draws a grid of small, semitransparent red rectangles, each with a faint stroke trail that animates to show their movement or placement over time. The layout is minimal—a single heading "Scripts" above the canvas—and the emphasis is on the lattice of shapes as they are built and possibly repositioned, revealing structural patterns through the animation. The visualization uses D3's data-binding and SVG rendering to create a dynamic, generative composition.

Mathematical Graphic Patterns

This animated canvas visualization generates evolving geometric patterns from a grid of circles. Each frame, the code computes positions and radii using trigonometric functions of time and grid coordinates, creating swirling, morphing shapes with shifting colors. The animation runs continuously via `requestAnimationFrame`, with a semi-transparent black overlay (Canvas `fillRect`) producing trailing motion blur effects. The canvas resizes dynamically to fit the window, and all rendering uses the native Canvas 2D API, including `arc` and `fill` for circle drawing. No external libraries are used; the math-driven design follows the original MIT tutorial’s approach.

This example generates a continuously evolving abstract animation by drawing Voronoi polygons in alternating black and white. It shows a recursive process where each polygon’s edges are traced with short, sequential line segments that slowly shrink the polygon’s boundary, creating a spiral-like contraction. The animation uses D3’s `d3.geom.voronoi()` with a clip extent to create the polygons from random points, and then employs Canvas 2D API calls like `beginPath`, `lineTo`, and `stroke` to draw each step. A queue (`queue.js`) schedules the drawing of each polygon, and the code alternates stroke colors (`#000` and `#fff`) after each full pass, repeating indefinitely.
