This visualization shows global military alliances as of 2023, with each alliance represented as a node positioned by member nations. A force-directed layout using `d3.forceSimulation` arranges the nodes, while an interactive map built with `d3.geoPath` and projected through a geographic projection displays the underlying world geography. Member countries are drawn as colored circles on the map, and hovering or clicking a node highlights the alliance's constituent nations. The dataset comes from a manually cleaned CSV file sourced from Wikipedia's list of military alliances, processed via Google Sheets and LibreOffice.

AI-generated description

This is a dataset of global military alliances as of March 9, 2023. Sourced from Wikipedia: List of military alliances.

Process:

Manually copy-paste the green (currently active) rows from that Wikipedia page into Google Sheets
Export as CSV
Manually format and clean up all cells using LibreOffice

Force Directed Graph

This example shows a force-directed graph of military equipment programs, with nodes colored by military branch and links representing dependencies between programs. Hovering highlights connected nodes and labels, while dragging lets users rearrange the layout. The visualization uses `d3.forceSimulation` for both graph and label positioning, `d3.zoom` for panning and scaling, and `d3.drag` for node interaction. Data comes from a local JSON file, rendered with SVG elements including circles, lines, and text labels.

Force Directed Graph

A force-directed graph visualizes the dependencies between Canadian military programs, with nodes colored by program group and links by dependency type. The d3.forceSimulation layout positions nodes and links, while a color legend allows interactive filtering by clicking to highlight specific groups. Data is loaded from a JSON file and rendered as SVG using D3 v5.

Networking Graph

This visualization shows a force-directed network graph of countries, with each node representing a country and links connecting them. Node color and size encode five highlighted nations (Afghanistan, Myanmar, South Sudan, Syrian Arab Rep., and Venezuela), with a legend identifying each group. The code uses D3 v4’s `d3.forceSimulation` with `forceLink`, `forceManyBody`, `forceCollide`, and `forceCenter` to position nodes, while links are rendered as SVG lines with stroke width proportional to link weight. Rendering is done declaratively in React, with nodes as SVG circles and drag interactions enabled via `d3.drag`.

Force Directed Graph

A force-directed graph visualizes dependencies between Canadian military equipment and infrastructure programs, with nodes colored by capability group and size representing connection count. Draggable nodes and zoomable panning allow exploration of the network. The code uses `d3.forceSimulation`, `d3.forceLink`, and `d3.zoom` on SVG elements, loading edge data from a CSV file and clustering nodes by degree into categorical groups.

Military spending

This chart visualizes military spending from 2001-2020 for major countries. Each colored line represents a country, with the x-axis showing time and the y-axis showing spending in US dollars. The visualization orders the lines by each country's final spending value to make comparisons easier. Built with D3 v5, the code uses `scaleTime`, `scaleLinear`, `scaleOrdinal`, `axisBottom`, `axisLeft`, and `line` to construct the SVG rendering. The data comes from a CSV file, and a color legend is rendered using a custom `colorLegend` function.

Force Directed Graph

A force-directed graph maps 44 military programs as nodes, colored by their branch (e.g., JOINT, RCAF) and linked by dependency levels (1–3) encoded with a pastel color scale. Dragging a node restarts the simulation, and clicking a legend entry filters nodes and links by category. Built with d3.forceSimulation and forceLink, the SVG renders circles, labels, and draggable interactions, loading JSON data from `data.json`.

Fork of Force Directed Graph

This force-directed graph visualizes dependencies among Canadian defense programs, with nodes colored by military branch (JOINT, RCAF, CA) and links colored by dependency strength. Built with D3 v5, it uses `d3.forceSimulation` with link, charge, and center forces to position the SVG elements. Users can drag nodes to reposition them, and clicking legend items filters the graph by highlighting matching nodes or links.

Force Layout Graph - National Contiguity

This example shows the national contiguity of countries using a force-directed graph where nodes represent individual countries and links indicate shared borders. The visualization loads geographic adjacency data from a GitHub-hosted JSON file, with each node rendered as a flag icon via the flag-icon-css CDN. Built with D3 v4, it uses `d3.forceSimulation` with link, charge, center, collide, and x/y positioning forces to arrange the nodes, while drag behavior lets users reposition them interactively. Hovering reveals a tooltip (via d3-tip) displaying the country name.
