This example uses a D3 v4 force layout to visualize research method data across multiple years from 2004 to 2014. Buttons let the user select a year, triggering a simulation that positions colored dots into groups representing different research categories. Each dot corresponds to a data point, and the dots can be dragged interactively. The visualization relies on `d3.forceSimulation` with `forceLink`, `forceCollide`, `forceManyBody`, `forceCenter`, and uses SVG circles colored with `d3.scaleOrdinal`. It loads data from a JSON file with arrays of counts per year and labels for each group.

D3 v4 - force layout

This example demonstrates a force-directed graph layout using D3 v4's physical simulation API. The visualization shows 100 labeled nodes connected by random links, with node sizes varying between 8 and 28 pixels. The simulation applies multiple forces—link attraction, collision avoidance, many-body repulsion, and centering—to position the nodes dynamically. Dragging nodes with the mouse temporarily restarts the simulation with higher alpha, allowing interactive manipulation of the network. The code uses `d3.forceSimulation`, `d3.forceLink`, `d3.forceCollide`, `d3.forceManyBody`, and `d3.drag` to render SVG circles and lines, updating positions on each simulation tick.

D3 v4 - force layout

This example demonstrates a force-directed network layout of 100 nodes and 100 links, rendered as animated SVG circles and lines. The visualization uses d3.forceSimulation with forces for link attraction, collision detection, many-body repulsion, centering, and x/y positioning. Users can drag nodes within the 900×500 pixel graph area, with the simulation’s alpha target adjusting during interaction. The layout updates every tick, repositioning nodes and links based on the simulation state.

Concentric circle force layout graph in D3.v4

This example visualizes a network of research papers on Real-Time Bidding for online advertising, showing papers as nodes and citations as links. The force-directed layout organizes papers into concentric circles by publication year, with more recent papers near the center. Nodes are colored by year and are draggable, with the graph supporting zooming and panning. The visualization uses D3.v4's `forceSimulation` API with `forceLink`, `forceManyBody`, `forceCenter`, and `forceCollide` forces to compute dynamic node positions. It renders nodes and links as SVG elements with animated transitions, and loads paper metadata from a JSON data file. Zoom interaction is implemented via D3's `zoom` object with configurable scale extents.

D3 v4 - force layout

This example shows a force-directed graph with 100 randomly generated nodes and links, rendered as SVG circles and lines. The code builds the network using `d3.forceSimulation` with forces for link distance, collision, charge, centering, and X/Y positioning, then updates node and link positions on each tick. Nodes are draggable via `d3.drag`, and drag events adjust the simulation’s alpha target to restart or settle movement. The data is synthesized in the script, and the visualization initializes from a blockbuilder.org fork.

Clustered Force Layout 4.0

This example shows a force-directed layout with 200 circles organized into 10 distinct clusters, each rendered in a different color from the `d3.schemeCategory20` palette. The circles are separated into their groups by the `clustering` custom force, while the `collide` function, which uses a quadtree, prevents overlap both within and between clusters. The visualization is built with D3 v4, uses the `d3.forceSimulation` API for physics, and renders via SVG. The `ticked` callback updates each circle’s `cx` and `cy` attributes as the simulation runs.

force directed text fit done

A force-directed layout arranges a hierarchical dataset as a bubble chart, with circle size proportional to each node’s value and text labels fitted inside. Nodes cluster by parent, while lines show parent–child links. The simulation uses `d3.forceSimulation` with `forceLink`, `forceManyBody`, `forceCenter`, and `forceCollide`. Labels are rendered as SVG text with font sizes computed per tick and node radius. Data loads from a CSV via `d3.csv`, and colors come from `d3.scaleOrdinal(d3.schemeCategory10)`.

D3 Force Simulation

A force-directed network of 100 nodes and 300 randomly generated links settles into a stable layout under a centering force, many-body repulsion, link distance constraints, and collision avoidance. The visualization uses D3 v4's `d3.forceSimulation` with `d3.forceCenter`, `d3.forceManyBody`, `d3.forceLink`, and `d3.forceCollide` to animate the physics, while nodes are draggable via D3's drag interaction. The simulation updates an SVG canvas on each tick, redrawing lines and circles as positions change. The random data is generated programmatically, creating an abstract, interactive demonstration of force-based layout.

Force Layout

This example demonstrates an interactive force-directed graph built with React and D3 v6. A hierarchical dataset is flattened into nodes and links, then rendered as circles and lines using SVG. The simulation uses `d3.forceSimulation` with center, charge, collide, and link forces. Moving the mouse dynamically adds `forceX` and `forceY` forces that pull nodes toward the pointer, with strength varying by node depth. Clicking applies a `forceRadial` orbit force around the clicked point and draws a green circle to indicate the orbit radius.
