This animation plots prime numbers in polar coordinates, revealing spiral patterns as increasingly more primes are added over time. Starting with the first 100 primes, the visualization gradually expands to include all primes up to a specified bound, with each prime colored along the summer color scheme based on its value. Built with Julia’s Plots library, it uses a polar projection and renders frames as PNG images, which are then assembled into an MP4 video via ffmpeg. The Primes package supplies the prime number sequence.

Plotting primes in polar coordinates

This visualization displays all prime numbers up to a given value as points in a polar coordinate system, where each prime’s radial distance corresponds to its numerical value and its angular position is determined by the same value. The points are colored along the summer color scheme, progressing from dark blue for small primes to yellow for larger ones, creating a striking spiral pattern. The code uses Julia’s Plots.jl with the `scatter` function, setting `proj=:polar` for the projection, and leverages the Primes.jl package to generate the prime list. A black background and a subtle marker size of 1 emphasize the dense distribution.

four variations of isprime for the first thousand integers, shuffled and rotated counts don't include original in their counts, but require it

Four variations of the `isprime` function for the first thousand integers are compared, showing how primality changes under digit shuffling, rotation, and reversal. The visualization plots each integer along the x-axis, with rows for the original prime status, the count of shuffled permutations that are prime, the count of rotated permutations that are prime, and whether the reversed digits are prime. The data comes from a CSV file processed with d3.js, using SVG elements to render the scatter-style chart. It highlights which primes remain prime under these digit transformations and which do not.

Gist 2d6a3f14addc4af066665b604b59e1e6

A force-directed graph displays prime numbers as nodes, with edges connecting each number to its divisors. The visualization uses d3.forceSimulation to compute node positions, while the isPrime function in PrimeNumberChecker.js determines which numbers are highlighted as primes. The graph renders using standard SVG elements, with node size and color encoding primality. The data appears to be generated programmatically rather than loaded from an external source, showing an interactive network of numeric relationships.

Visualzing digits

This visualization animates the sequence of digits in a constant (such as π) by drawing curved, color-coded transitions between each consecutive digit pair around a circular clock-like layout. As frames advance, it reveals bars whose radial length encodes the cumulative frequency of each digit transition, while optional dots highlight repeated identical digits. Built with Julia and Luxor, it uses `arc2r` for the circular digit ring, `BezierPathSegment` with `setblend` for gradient transition curves, and `poly` for the frequency bars, sourced from parsed BigFloat digits or prime numbers.

Gaussian Primes - MrWatson after Jason Davies

This visualization plots Gaussian primes as filled squares on the complex plane, with the pattern emerging across a grid of integers. It uses d3.v5 to render the SVG elements, with a custom `isGaussianPrime` function that checks the criteria for primes on the axes and in the interior. The code generates points by iterating over a symmetric range and applies a static rendering, with a circular clipping mask defining the visible area. The implementation follows Jason Davies’ original approach, though the developer notes that a cached prime-checking function underperforms the simpler dynamic version.

Prim’s Algorithm IV

The visualization displays an animated spanning tree generated by Prim’s algorithm on a maze, with colors cycling through a cubehelix color scale to highlight the tree's structure. The maze is computed asynchronously in a worker thread using a min-heap priority queue. The animation renders to a Canvas via `putImageData`, updating pixel colors every 20 milliseconds based on each cell's distance from the start, while rotating the hue through 360 degrees. D3.js (v3) provides the cubehelix interpolation and animation timing.

factorcircles

This visualization represents a positive integer as nested circles, where each factor of the number determines how many smaller circles are arranged around the circumference of a parent circle. The recursive algorithm draws one level per prime factor, with the circle radius shrinking according to the factor’s value. Users can input a custom number, toggle outlines, highlight prime numbers with red fills, or reverse the nesting order. Built with p5.js, it uses the canvas API for drawing and the `createInput` and `createButton` DOM elements for controls.

Kaggle Santa 2018 Julia animation

This animation visualizes a path through 197,701 cities from the Kaggle Santa 2018 competition, distinguishing prime-numbered city locations in orange from the traversed route. The route starts with a zoomed-in view, then progressively expands to reveal the full path, with blue segments marking normal travel, green for every tenth step, and red indicating steps near prime cities. Built with Julia using Plots.jl, CSV.jl, and DataFrames, it generates frames via the `gr()` backend and assembles them into an MP4 with the `mp4` function at 20 fps.
