The visualization lists countries alphabetically with their ISO3 codes, synonyms, and columns indicating whether postal code point or polygon data exists for each. Hovering highlights rows. It queries the CartoDB SQL API to fetch country names, ISO3 codes, and comma-separated synonyms from the `country_decoder` table, then checks the `global_postal_code_points` and `global_postal_code_polygons` tables for matching postal codes. The page uses CartoDB.js to run SQL queries and plain JavaScript to build the HTML list dynamically.

list of country names

The visualization is a grid of country names, each linked to its ISO code, highlighting the variety of aliases and alternate names used for the same nation. It demonstrates how a single country can appear under multiple labels, such as “Bahamas” and “The Bahamas,” or “Russia” and “Russian Federation,” revealing the inconsistencies common in real-world datasets. The layout is generated with D3.js, using a force simulation (`d3.forceSimulation`) to position the text elements, while the country boundaries are drawn with `d3.geoPath` and geographic projections. The data comes from a gist by Fil, providing a clean, interactive reference for exploring name variations across different sources.

Gist a9d6fbcc3a97b7904359

This example provides a reference dataset of countries and their corresponding ISO country codes, compiled as a CSV file for use in web applications. The data is presented as a simple two-column list mapping two-letter country codes (e.g., AF, AL, DZ) to full country names (e.g., Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria). The visualization consists of a text-based listing, suitable for developers needing a static, downloadable lookup table for country codes and names in their applications. No charts or graphical elements are included; the focus is purely on the structured data.

GeoNames codes (source: http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html)

This visualization maps the hierarchical structure of GeoNames feature codes, grouping them by category such as administrative divisions and hydrographic features. It uses a force-directed layout via `d3.forceSimulation` to position nodes representing individual codes, with links showing parent-child relationships. The data comes from a TSV file parsed with `d3.tsv`, and the interface highlights code abbreviations alongside their short descriptions when hovered.

Gist 9378741

This interactive interface guides users through geocoding tabular data, first classifying location columns by type—city names, postal codes, IP addresses, or street addresses—then offering point or polygon output options. After georeferencing, it displays result summaries with success counts, failure explanations, and cost feedback, including free and paid quota messaging. The example uses CartoDB’s geocoding API and a dynamic form interface, with state-driven prompts and dropdowns to collect necessary country or region details before triggering the geocoding process.

Country codes (ISO 3166) to latitude longitude - converted from http://www.maxmind.com/app/country_latlon

This example maps ISO 3166 country codes to their corresponding latitude and longitude coordinates, based on data originally from MaxMind and converted into a JSON array. Each country code is paired with an array containing its latitude and longitude values, making it easy to look up geographic positions by code. The data is presented as a static JSON file for use in other visualizations or mapping applications.

Countries of the world

This example displays a summary of a dataset containing information about countries, including population, GDP, and literacy. It shows the number of rows, columns, and total data size in kilobytes, followed by a preview of the first ten rows. The visualization uses D3’s `select` and `csv` functions to load the data. Results are rendered as text using HTML `pre` elements, with a black background and green monospace styling. The csv data from Kaggle is fetched and printed as JSON.

World Map

This world map colors each country with a unique color from a categorical scale, using a Kavrayskiy VII projection and a graticule overlay. The map is rendered as SVG with d3.geo.path, and country boundaries are drawn as a white mesh via topojson.mesh. Country colors are assigned sequentially by a neighbor-based algorithm in the data join, ensuring adjacent countries differ. The Natural Earth Admin 0 countries dataset is loaded as TopoJSON, with each country identified by its ISO 3166-1 numeric code.

Something crazy

This example displays a choropleth map of U.S. postal codes, where a randomly selected threshold dynamically recolors polygons based on their population totals. The visualization uses the CartoDB.js library to load a Leaflet map layer, then modifies its CartoCSS styling on each page load. A JavaScript function converts the current timestamp into an RGB color, which is applied to polygons exceeding a random population value, while all other areas retain a fixed pink fill. The underlying data comes from a CartoDB-hosted dataset of postal code boundaries.
