Bay Area Climb Effort Explorer
This visualization lets users explore Strava rider rankings on famous Bay Area climbs through parallel coordinates. It compares various ranking metrics, including performance sums and Fiets-weighted scores, to see how they relate across riders. The interface supports brushing to filter data, reordering axes, and inverting axes to analyze correlations. Built with D3.js, it renders data lines onto multiple Canvas layers and uses an SVG overlay for axes and labels, with data loaded from a CSV file.
AI-generated descriptionAn exploration of top riders on some of the most famous Bay Area road climbs. Data extracted from Strava. The coordinates are various metrics you may consider ranking riders by, for example:
- how many climbs they've completed
- the sum of KOM/effort for all of their efforts
- that sum but weighted by the Fiets index
- the previous but only including their top 10 performances
and so on.
When comparing riders in this asynchronous way, it's not obvious what the best indicator of a great rider is. Using parallel coordinates, we can get an idea of how these various metrics are related.
