This seed file for the Rate My Setup application populates a PostgreSQL database with initial user, post, and rating records. It demonstrates structured SQL `INSERT` statements that define three user accounts with hashed passwords, two image posts with Unsplash URLs and captions, and three numeric ratings linking specific users to posts. The example showcases the database schema underlying the application's data model.

PostgreSQL command line cheatsheet

This example presents a text-based cheat sheet for PostgreSQL command-line tools, rendering a curated list of psql commands, configuration snippets, and handy SQL queries in a plain markdown document. It shows the core syntax for database management tasks, such as connecting to databases, listing tables and views, managing user roles, and adjusting server logging verbosity, alongside query examples for inspecting indexes, active sessions, and table sizes. The visualization relies on static code blocks and inline formatting, with no interactive graphics or JavaScript libraries; instead, it leverages the raw text content from a gist, emphasizing practical API references like `psql` meta-commands and `pg_stat_activity` queries.

PostgreSQL installation tutorial

This example presents a step-by-step guide for installing PostgreSQL across macOS, Linux, and Windows. It shows the terminal command `psql -U postgres` as the target for verifying a successful setup, then details OS-specific actions, such as using the Postgres.app on macOS, compiling from source via `wget` on Linux, and using the EnterpriseDB installer on Windows. The tutorial also covers checking the `$PATH` variable and verifying the server port with `lsof`.

A schema for uploading MOT test data, as suggested in the user guide with the exception of the `SET storage_engine=MyISAM` which is there to allow the `ENABLE KEYS\DISABLE KEYS` mechanism used in the large table uploads. Also the field `RFRINSPMANDESC TEXT(500) #Variation from suggested schema due to 1074 error` is suggested as `char` in the user guide but for my MySQL setup this exceeds the allowed size for char.

This schema defines the relational structure for importing UK MOT test data, showing the primary tables for test results, test items, item details, item groups, and failure locations. It demonstrates the use of MySQL DDL with explicit primary keys, composite indexes, and the MyISAM storage engine to enable bulk-loading optimizations. The code highlights practical deviations from the official user guide, such as using `TEXT(500)` for inspection descriptions instead of an oversized `CHAR`, accommodating MySQL’s row-size limits while preserving data integrity.

Gist a99d287be62c6d73536521c0e5e74e58

This example scrapes Instagram profile and post data to track follower counts, likes, comments, captions, and post dates for selected users, associating each entry with an industry topic. The script uses Selenium to automate login and search, BeautifulSoup to parse the page source, and the Instagram GraphQL data embedded in `window._sharedData` to extract metrics. It writes the collected records to a CSV via pandas, pausing with random sleeps to avoid detection. The visualization highlights how social-media engagement varies across profiles and industries over time.

Shell script to import data into Postgres from https://www.nhgis.org. If you use this, you'll need to edit line 14 to include the census data you're importing.

This script sets up a Postgres database to hold U.S. Census block-group data, combining demographic race counts with spatial geometries. It first imports CSV race data into a table, then converts shapefiles to a uniform projection (EPSG:4326) using `ogr2ogr` and appends them via `shp2pgsql`. The code uses PostGIS for geometry support and creates a spatial index on the `geom` column. It relies on command-line tools like `dropdb`, `createdb`, and `psql`, processing files from the NHGIS source archive. The final output enables querying joined attribute and spatial data.

SQL to upload the smaller tables of the MOT test dataset

This example demonstrates how to prepare smaller reference tables from the MOT test dataset for database loading, showing the SQL commands that import three text files—failure_location, item_detail, and item_group—into their corresponding MySQL tables. The script uses the `LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE` API to parse pipe-delimited files with newline-terminated records, explicitly specifying field and line terminators. The code relies on standard SQL syntax within a MySQL environment, first selecting the MOT database with `USE MOT` before executing each import. This approach highlights a straightforward, file-based data ingestion pattern rather than a visual rendering technique, focusing on the database population step that precedes any charting or visualization work.

Recipe App

This example shows a recipe management system with a login form, password validation, recipe creation, and search functionality. The interface uses standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with jQuery for UI interactions and Bootstrap for styling. The back end is built with Express, MySQL, and Sequelize for database operations, while password-rules enforces password complexity. The code includes a SQL schema for account storage, recipe, ingredient, allergen, and meal type models, and routes for authentication and recipe creation.

just a bookmark of random psql queries.

This example visualizes spatial relationships between neighborhoods, city blocks, and demographic data in Portland and Laurelhurst through a series of SQL queries. The code shows how geographic joins and intersections are performed using PostGIS functions like `ST_Intersects`, combining building footprints, block polygons, and census block-group data. The queries calculate race-based percentages, such as percent white and percent black, from census fields like `h7x002` and `h7x003`, while filtering for specific places and positive population counts. The gist demonstrates iterative query building for choropleth-style analysis, revealing how raw geographic and tabular data are merged to support subsequent mapping or charting in a visualization tool.
