Global Population By Region Until 2100
This interactive data visualization shows how global population is projected to change across regions from 1950 to 2100. It uses a single disk whose overall size scales with total world population, while each region’s area within the disk corresponds to its population. The visualization is built with D3.js v6 and the d3-voronoi-map plugin, which partitions the disk into smoothly animating cells as the data changes year by year. Data is loaded from a CSV file and rendered as SVG.
AI-generated descriptionThis block shows how population by region is expected to change over the coming years.
It is a remake of a dataviz featured in Visual Capitalist's article Animation: Global Population by Region From 1950 to 2100, which was inspired by geographer Simon Kuestenmacher :

For this remake, the main idea was to make it more connected to our Earth (as I found the original pie chart and bar chart lacking this feeling). So I use a disk. The increase of this disk encodes the increase of the global population over years. In this disk, the area of each cell encodes the population of its corresponding region.
Technically speaking:
- I use the d3-voronoi-map plugin to partition the disk; notably, the animation capability of the plugin allows to smoothly animate cell changes from one year to another
- the increase of the entire disk uses the CSS3's scale transform; an original idea emmerging fom discussions with Nadieh Bremer, as the plugin is able to animate changes of cells of a static/fixed clipping polygon
