This visualization displays the frequency of each letter in the English alphabet as horizontal bars, using data from a CSV file. Two buttons, "Ascend" and "Descend," allow viewers to reorder the bars by frequency in ascending or descending order, with animated transitions. The chart is built with D3 v4, using `d3.scaleLinear` for the x-axis scale and SVG rectangles for the bars, while `d3.csv` loads the data and `transition()` animates the reordering.

Alpha frequencies

This example displays the relative frequencies of letters in the English language as horizontal bars, sorted from most to least frequent. It uses a linear x-scale (d3.scaleLinear) to map frequency values to pixel widths, with each bar’s height fixed at 10 pixels and positioned vertically by index. The chart renders as an SVG element appended to the page body, with data loaded from a local CSV file via d3.csv, parsed, and sorted in descending order before drawing. The visualization is built with D3 v4.

Radial Bar Chart

This radial bar chart displays the relative frequency of each letter in the English alphabet, sorted from highest to lowest value. The visualization uses D3 v3 to generate an animated SVG, with arcs representing data values via a linear scale. Each arc transitions from zero to its final length using an elastic easing and `attrTween`, while dashed concentric circles and a labeled axis provide context. Letter labels are placed along an outer circular path using `textPath`, and the data comes from an external CSV file.

Bar Chart

This bar chart visualizes the frequency of each letter in the English alphabet, with the data loaded from a TSV file using `d3.tsv`. The chart uses an ordinal scale for the x-axis and a linear scale for the y-axis, formatted as percentages via `d3.format`. The bars are rendered as SVG rectangles that animate upward over three seconds using `transition`, with a green-to-purple hover effect. Axes are generated with `d3.svg.axis`, and the chart is built with D3 version 3.5.5.

Let's Make a Bar Chart (v4)

This bar chart displays the relative frequency of each letter in the English alphabet, using a simple, static SVG visualization. The code loads letter-frequency data from a TSV file and maps it to rectangles using `d3.scaleBand` for the x-axis and `d3.scaleLinear` for the y-axis. Axes are rendered with `d3.axisBottom` and `d3.axisLeft`, with y-axis ticks formatted as percentages. Hovering over a bar changes its fill from steelblue to brown via CSS, while the chart itself is built with D3 v4’s data-join pattern (`enter().append`).

Bar Chart in D3 v5

This bar chart displays the frequency of each letter in the English alphabet, with letters arranged along the x-axis and their proportional frequencies along the y-axis. It first parses a tab-separated values (TSV) file using `d3.tsv`, converting string frequencies to numbers. The visualization then applies `d3.scaleBand` for the categorical x-axis and `d3.scaleLinear` for the numeric y-axis, with axes generated via `d3.axisBottom` and `d3.axisLeft`. Rendered as SVG rectangles with a steelblue fill that turns brown on hover, the chart uses a conventional margin layout and highlights bars without tooltips or animation.

fresh block

This example displays the relative frequencies of English letters as a horizontal bar chart, using data from a CSV file. The bars are sorted ascending by frequency and rendered as SVG rectangles with a blue fill, with hover effects changing their color. The visualization uses d3.csv to load the data, d3.scaleBand for the categorical y-axis, d3.scaleLinear for the numeric x-axis, and d3.axisTop and d3.axisLeft for the axes, with the x-axis formatted as percentages.

Radial Bar Chart

A radial bar chart displays the frequency of each letter of the alphabet as a series of animated, color-coded arcs extending outward from a central point. The letters are sorted by value and labeled along the perimeter, with dashed circular reference lines and tick marks radiating from the center. Built with D3 v3, the SVG visualization animates each segment’s growth using `transition.attrTween` with an elastic easing, driven by data from a CSV file. The code employs `d3.svg.arc` for segment geometry, `d3.scale.linear` for the radial axis, and `d3.scale.ordinal` for the color palette.

Bar Chart

This bar chart displays the frequency of each letter in the English language, with letters ordered alphabetically along the x-axis and their proportional frequencies shown as vertical steelblue bars that turn brown on hover. The chart uses the d3.tsv method to load and parse the data, d3.scale.ordinal for the x-position encoding, and d3.scale.linear for the y-axis, which is formatted as percentages. Axes are rendered with d3.svg.axis, and the y-axis domain is computed using d3.max. The visualization is drawn as SVG with conventional margins.
