A map of the United States charts the opening of Walmart stores from 1962 onwards. Each store is represented by a dot placed according to its geographic coordinates, using the Albers USA projection. A date-scrubbing control animates the dots into view over time, revealing the company’s expansion from its first store in Arkansas to thousands across the country.

Fork of D3 Starter

This example animates a map of Walmart store openings across the United States over time, using a sliding date window to reveal dots as they appear. It combines D3 v7 with a topojson map of the lower 48 states and a geographic projection via `d3.geoAlbersUsa` and `d3.geoPath`. Store locations are loaded from a TSV file and sorted by date, while a scrubber drives the animation. The code uses `d3.create`, `selection.join`, and `transition.attr` to show and hide arrival points, with a blue dot marking the current store.

11540639-ICE-7 Line Chart

This line chart shows the number of Walmart stores in the US over the last ten years, with years on the x-axis and store counts on the y-axis. The visualization is rendered as an SVG using D3 v5, employing `scaleTime` for the temporal axis, `scaleLinear` for the count axis, and `line` to generate the path. The chart includes labeled axes, grid lines, and a bold orange line, with data parsed from a CSV file using `csv` and `timeParse`. The styling uses custom CSS for tick labels, axis text, and the line’s appearance.

11540639-ICE7-Area Chart

This area chart displays the number of Walmart stores in the US from 2011 to 2021. A smooth curve, generated using the `area()` and `curveBasis` functions, fills the space beneath the line, which uses `line()`, with a deeppink color. The chart is built with D3 v5, rendering to SVG, and loads its data from a CSV file hosted in a GitHub gist by SravanthiSilla.

Bivariate Hexbin Map

This example maps approximately 3,000 Walmart store locations across the United States using hexagonal binning. It projects the store coordinates with the d3.geoAlbersUsa projection, then groups them into hexagons using d3.hexbin. Hexagon area encodes the number of stores in each bin, while the fill color encodes the median store age, ranging from black for older stores to steelblue for newer ones. The map is rendered as SVG, with d3.geoPath drawing the nation and state boundaries from TopoJSON data.

Area chart

This area chart visualizes temperature changes at Walmart from 2001 to 2021 using a smooth basis curve. The chart employs D3 v5’s `area` and `line` generators with `curveBasis` to create the shaded region and outline, while `scaleTime` and `scaleLinear` map the temporal and temperature axes. Data is loaded from a CSV via D3’s `csv` function, and the SVG rendering includes styled axes with tick marks and labels, with the area filled in blue and the line stroked in black.

line chart

This line chart visualizes Walmart’s total sales over time, with each point representing a daily sales total plotted against the corresponding date. The chart uses the Chart.js library to render the line on an HTML5 canvas, fetching the data from a raw CSV file hosted in a GitHub gist. The code parses the CSV by splitting rows and extracting the date and sales columns, then configures the chart with a blue border and semi-transparent fill. Axis labels for date and sales are set explicitly, and the chart is displayed at a fixed size of 800 by 400 pixels.

walmart

This example displays a summary of a cleaned Walmart dataset, showing a text message with the file size, row count, and column count alongside a static image of a Walmart store. The visualization uses React with hooks (`useState`, `useEffect`) to fetch the CSV data from a GitHub gist, parses the raw text by splitting on newlines and commas, and computes the dataset dimensions. The code relies on the native `fetch` API to retrieve the data, and renders the message and image using React DOM. The image is sourced from a New York Times URL, and the layout uses inline styles for centering and spacing.

ICE 7.4

This visualization displays 11 years of Walmart sales data as a smooth area chart, with a black line tracing sales over time above a yellow filled region. The SVG chart uses D3.js v5 scales, axes, and generators, including `scaleTime`, `scaleLinear`, `line`, and `area` with `curveBasis` for smoothing. The data is loaded from a remote CSV file, with years parsed via `d3.timeParse` and sales converted to numbers. Axis labels and gridlines are styled through CSS, while tick labels on the y-axis are formatted using D3's `format` with the `.3s` specifier.
