This random quote machine displays a curated set of movie and historical quotes, each paired with its author. Clicking the “New Quote” button or loading the page triggers a function that selects a random entry from a hardcoded Map and displays it. The interface simultaneously changes both the page background and button colors to a randomly generated RGB value, using JavaScript’s `Math.random` and direct DOM manipulation via `querySelectorAll` and `innerHTML`. Social sharing links for Twitter and Facebook are included.

This visualization generates 1,000 random three-word phrases by selecting words from a dictionary that begin with the letters K, I, and K, then joins them with spaces. The example uses the `dictionary-js` package to load a word list, filters words by their initial letter, and samples them at random to construct each phrase. The resulting output is a list of invented combinations, highlighting the quirky and arbitrary nature of random word assembly.

Parse CSV with Day of DH Quotations as XML

This example shows how to randomly select and display a single quotation from a CSV file of "Day of DH" responses, rendering it as a styled HTML page. It first parses the remote CSV with the `csv:parse` function and `fetch:text`, then uses `random:integer` to pick a random record. The code generates a Bootstrap-based webpage that displays the quote, author, and date. The XQuery scripts include a plain parsing version, a random-selection version, and two HTML-rendering versions, one using the RESTXQ module for HTTP GET requests.

random array Html

This example demonstrates a randomly shuffled array of numbers from 1 to 90 displayed as a vertical list of individual paragraph elements. The code first builds the array, then applies the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm using JavaScript’s `Math.random()` to permute the order. Each resulting number is rendered into a `<p>` element via the DOM API `document.createElement` and appended to a container. The page uses no external libraries, relying solely on vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript within a single `index.html` file.

This example demonstrates a data-gathering loop that queries the MovieDB API for random movie titles and genres, repeating until it finds a title that is not an error. It shows how to handle API responses that may return "Error: Not Found" by retrying with new random IDs. The code uses NetsBlox's RPC mechanism to call `movieTitle` and `movieGenres` endpoints, storing results in variables for later use. The visualization itself is not rendered here—the focus is on the iterative data collection logic, which could later feed a chart or graph.

Fork of HTML Starter

This interactive canvas app generates Bob Ross–style landscape paintings. Each click produces a randomized scene with layered mountains, clouds, a lake, forests, trees, and possibly a cabin, using HTML5 Canvas drawing APIs within JavaScript. The painting process works from background to foreground, and a new inspirational quote accompanies every generated artwork. The interface includes buttons to trigger a new painting or clear the canvas.

Chips off the Old Benchley I find myself trying to find this every now and then.

The visualization shows a network of quotes and references drawn from Robert Benchley’s essay, with nodes representing phrases and edges mapping how each quote connects to the source text. It uses `d3.forceSimulation` for layout and `d3.select` with SVG paths to draw links and nodes. The data comes from a plain-text gist, parsed into a graph structure where node size reflects repetition frequency. Hovering highlights neighboring connections, while colors distinguish direct quotes from paraphrased fragments.

This example is a data-art composition built from a personal list of recommended web design and programming books, rendered as an interactive force-directed graph. It visualizes the relationships between books, their authors, and their associated topics (like usability, web standards, JavaScript, Ruby, and Rails) using `d3.forceSimulation` for physics-based layout and dynamic node positioning. Each book title, URL, and annotation from the original text is embedded as textual nodes and links, with the graph’s structure and labels derived directly from the source gist’s content. The rendering approach uses SVG elements updated via D3’s data join, and while no explicit additional libraries are mentioned, the code relies on standard D3 v4+ APIs for simulation, drag behavior, and tick updates to show the clustered, interlinked reading list.

Random Squares

Random Squares demonstrates SVG shape generation by populating a 1000×1000 canvas with 500 randomly positioned, sized, and colored rectangles. Each `<rect>` element receives a random RGB fill, a random x/y coordinate within the viewport, and a random width and height up to 50 pixels. The code uses vanilla JavaScript with `Math.random()` to compute values and `document.querySelector('svg').innerHTML` to append shapes directly to the SVG DOM. The result is a dense, chaotic mosaic of overlapping squares with no underlying data or interaction, showcasing basic SVG rendering through a simple procedural loop.
