Five fruit circles animate through the general update pattern with D3's data join, enter, update, and exit selections. Apples transition from radius 50 to 20 when replaced by lemons, while removed fruits shrink to zero before deletion. The visualization uses `selection.merge`, `selection.transition`, and ordinal scales from d3-scale to map fruit types to sizes and colors in an SVG.

Bowl of fruit - general update pattern

Five circles represent fruits in a bowl, transitioning through a sequence of additions and removals using D3's general update pattern. The visualization demonstrates enter, update, and exit selections via `selection.merge` and `transition().duration()`, with apples and lemons distinguished by `d3.scaleOrdinal` color and radius scales. SVG circles animate smoothly as fruits are eaten and replaced, showcasing data joins keyed by unique IDs. The code uses D3 v5 with ES6 modules, rendering animated SVG output.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles represent apples in an SVG bowl, and a sequence of animated updates demonstrates D3's general update pattern. The visualization starts with five apples, then removes one, changes another into a lemon, and finally filters out a third fruit, using enter, merge, and exit selections. D3 v6 scales map fruit types to colors and radii, while transitions animate radius and position changes over one second. The `fruitBowl` module handles the data join with `selection.data`, `enter.append`, and `exit.remove` APIs.

Bowl of Fruit - General update pattern

Five circles representing apples transition in and out of an SVG bowl over timed intervals, demonstrating D3's general update pattern. The visualization shows how data joins handle entering, updating, and exiting elements: apples disappear, one apple is replaced by a lemon, and another is removed. The code uses `d3.scaleOrdinal` for color and radius scales, `selection.enter()`, `selection.merge()`, `selection.exit()`, and `transition().duration()` to animate circle attributes like `r` and `cx`.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern

Five circles representing apples animate into a bowl-like arrangement using D3's general update pattern. The visualization demonstrates enter, update, and exit selections as apples are removed and one is replaced by a lemon, with color and radius scales mapping fruit type to visual properties. Using D3 v5, transitions animate the circles' position and radius over one second, while the exit selection shrinks removed circles to zero before deletion.

Bowl of Fruit-General Update Pattern

Five fruit circles render as apples and shift position, change type, or disappear over time. The example demonstrates D3’s general update pattern with data joins, using `selection.enter`, `merge`, and `exit` to handle entering, updating, and exiting elements. Each state transition animates circle radius and position via `transition().duration(1000)`, while `scaleOrdinal` maps fruit type to color and size. The visualization uses an SVG rendering approach with D3 v5 and randomly generated fruit IDs as the data source.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern (Before Animation)

Five fruit circles in a bowl animate through data changes, showing apples fading out, one apple changing into a lemon, and a fruit being removed. This example demonstrates the general update pattern with enter, update, and exit selections. It uses D3 v5's `scaleOrdinal` for color and radius mapping, SVG rendering, and `selection.merge` to handle transitions between data states.

Bowl of Fruit - General Update Pattern!

A bowl of fruit animates through a general update pattern using D3 v5 selections, showing circles representing apples and lemons as they enter, update, and exit. The visualization uses `selection.data` with object identity keys, `transition` for smooth radius changes, and ordinal scales for color and size. JavaScript `setTimeout` calls trigger three sequential state changes: removing a fruit from the end, changing an apple to a lemon, and filtering out a middle fruit. Circle elements are appended to an SVG canvas, with enter transitions starting at radius zero and exit transitions shrinking back to zero before removal.
