A horizontal bar chart displays the population of five countries from a CSV file. The chart uses a margin convention to offset the inner plotting area from the SVG canvas edges. React state manages the asynchronous loading of the data via `d3.csv`. The chart is rendered with SVG elements, using `d3.scaleBand` for the categorical y-axis and `d3.scaleLinear` for the continuous x-axis.

The Margin Convention

A bar chart displays population data for ten countries, encoded as horizontal rectangles whose widths scale with each country’s 2020 population. The visualization implements the margin convention by using a translation to offset an inner group from the SVG’s edges. React manages the rendering state, loading the CSV data via `d3.csv` and applying `scaleBand` for the categorical y-axis and `scaleLinear` for the quantitative x-axis. The chart demonstrates how to structure SVG output using React and D3 v7.

The Margin Convention

This example shows a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 countries by population in 2020, loaded from a CSV file. The chart demonstrates the margin convention by offsetting a group of rectangles using an SVG transform. React state manages the asynchronous data loading with `d3.csv`, while the scales `scaleBand` and `scaleLinear` map country names and population counts to the inner chart dimensions. The bars are rendered as SVG `rect` elements within React’s declarative JSX structure.

The Margin Convention

This example shows a horizontal bar chart ranking the ten most populous countries in 2021, using data loaded from a CSV file. The visualization applies the margin convention to position the chart within an SVG canvas, with a band scale for country categories and a linear scale for population values. React manages the component state and renders the rectangles, while D3’s `csv` utility fetches and parses the data. The chart displays population sizes proportionally, with country names on the y-axis.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3 by rendering a horizontal bar chart of population data for the top 10 countries from a CSV file. The visualization uses React to manage state and render SVG elements, while D3 utilities (`csv`, `scaleBand`, `scaleLinear`, and `max`) handle data loading and scaling. A fixed margin object creates inner dimensions for the plot area, with bars translated inside a `<g>` element. The chart shows each country's 2020 population as a proportional bar, with axes omitted to focus purely on bar lengths and spacing.

the margin convention

This example shows a horizontal bar chart of the top 10 countries by projected 2020 population, loaded as CSV via D3’s `csv` utility. It demonstrates the margin convention by rendering an SVG with a left offset of 200 pixels, using `scaleBand` for the y-axis and `scaleLinear` for the x-axis, with gridlines from `xScale.ticks()`. React manages the state and renders each `<rect>`, `<line>`, and `<text>` element, while D3 provides the data parsing and scales.

The Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3, rendering a horizontal bar chart of the ten most populous countries using UN World Population Prospects 2019 data. The SVG visualization maps each country’s 2020 population to a bar width via `d3.scaleLinear` and uses `d3.scaleBand` for the categorical y-axis, with bars grouped inside a translated `<g>` element that respects the specified margin. The React component asynchronously loads CSV data with `d3.csv`, and the chart updates only after the data is fetched, displaying a loading message beforehand.

Margin Convention

This example displays a horizontal bar chart that contrasts the populations of ten countries. The bar lengths are proportional to each country’s 2020 population, with country names listed along the vertical axis. The code uses React’s `useState` and `useEffect` to asynchronously fetch CSV data from a remote URL, then leverages D3 utilities like `scaleBand` for the categorical y-axis and `scaleLinear` for the quantitative x-axis. The SVG rendering applies a margin convention, translating a group element by the top and left margin values to position the chart within the 960x500 canvas.

Margin Convention

This example demonstrates the margin convention in D3, rendering a horizontal bar chart of population data for the top 10 countries in 2020. The chart displays bars scaled by population using `d3.scaleLinear` and `d3.scaleBand`, with the SVG group translated to respect the defined margins. React manages the component state, loading the CSV data via `d3.csv` before rendering the SVG rectangles.
