This stacked bar chart shows the count of cabinet appointees by party affiliation, with bars divided into minority and non-minority segments. It uses the vega-lite-api in JavaScript to create a bar mark, encoding the categorical 'Party' field on the x-axis and 'Minority' on the color channel. Data is loaded asynchronously from a CSV of American cabinet appointments via d3.csv. The visualization is rendered with Vega-Lite and styled using a custom config that adjusts font sizes and removes axis domains.

AI-generated description

A visualization constructed using the vega-lite-api.

The stacked bar chart above provides the number of minority individuals in American cabinets based on the party affiliation of the individual involved.

This is the "American Cabinets" data set, specifically the "American Cabinets - Appointments" csv from this GitHub gist (Chamberlain, Tait. 2020. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CABINET APPOINTMENTS DATASET. GitHub.) The csv contains confirmed cabinet appointments from Washington through the current administration. It includes names, dates, scandals, and attributes such as education, minority, gender, etc. Each row provides information on a different appointee.

American Cabinets - Scandals by Party

This stacked bar chart shows the number of cabinet appointees involved in scandals, broken down by political party, using the American Cabinets Appointments dataset. The visualization uses the vega-lite-api library, registering vega, vega-lite, and vega-tooltip, to render a bar chart where each bar’s height represents the total count of appointments and color encodes whether a scandal flag is present. Data is loaded asynchronously via d3.csv from a GitHub gist, and the chart is configured with custom axis styles for readability.

American Sheriffs: Minority Representatives by Party

This visualization uses a bar chart to show the count of American sheriffs by political party, with bars colored by the sheriff’s racial identity. It clearly reveals that white sheriffs dominate all parties, while minority representatives are nearly absent among Republicans and Independents. Built with the Vega-Lite API, the chart encodes party affiliation on the x-axis, race as color, and uses a count aggregation for the y-axis. Data comes from a CSV file loaded via `d3.csv` from the Reflective Democracy American Sheriffs database, with tooltips provided by Vega-Tooltip.

American Cabinets Appointments - Dataset Overview

This visualization offers a concise quantitative summary of a dataset detailing American cabinet appointments from George Washington's presidency onward. The view reports three key metrics: the dataset’s approximate size in kilobytes, its total row count, and its number of columns. The code fetches the external CSV file using the `d3.csv` method and then formats the raw text to compute the file size, while directly accessing the parsed array’s length for rows and the `columns` property for columns. The resulting text is displayed in a large, preformatted element on the page.

Stacked Normalized Horizontal Bar Chart

This stacked normalized horizontal bar chart visualizes the distribution of male and female members across multiple political party groups, with each bar normalized to represent proportions rather than raw counts. The data is sourced from a CSV file containing party names and gender counts. The chart uses D3 v6’s `d3.stack()` with `d3.stackOffsetExpand` for normalization, rendered as SVG rectangles with a color scale distinguishing genders. Interactive tooltips display exact values, while labels show raw counts, and the chart includes a color legend for age categories.

International Cabinets - Females over Time

A scatterplot shows the ratio of female cabinet members per country over time, with each point representing a country-year. The data reveals an upward trend in female representation from 1966 to 2016. Built with the vega-lite-api, the visualization uses `markCircle` with red, semi-transparent points, encoding year on the x-axis and `n_female_ratio` on the y-axis. Data comes from the WhoGov International Cabinets dataset, loaded via D3's `csv` function, with custom axis styling from a config file.

International Cabinets - Females and Military

This scatterplot visualizes the relationship between the ratio of female cabinet members and the ratio of cabinet members with military titles across countries and years. The chart displays an inverse relationship between the two variables. Built with the vega-lite-api and D3, it loads CSV data from WhoGov’s International Cabinets dataset, covering over 50,000 cabinet members from 177 countries between 1966 and 2016. Each point represents a country-year observation, with tooltips revealing country names on hover.
